Coffee – Good or Bad for Your Health

Coffee and tea are quickly becoming one of the largest exports of many countries around the world as coffee and tea drinkers quickly spend over $20 billion annually for their daily cup of caffeine. Twenty billion is nothing to be scoffed at these days.

We often hear the dangers of drinking caffeine such as insomnia, headaches, and raised blood pressure (which is not good if you have hypertension). But are there any benefits to drinking coffee?

Here are some interesting facts about the average coffee drinker who drinks three to four cups of coffee each day:

  • Regular coffee drinkers have about 1/3 less asthma symptoms than those of non-coffee drinkers according to a Harvard researcher who studied 20,000 people.

  • A Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program study of 128,934 nurses found that coffee drinkers were significantly less likely to commit suicide than nondrinkers.

  • Average coffee drinkers can have three or four cups of coffee every day without any health risk.

  • One study found that coffee drinkers have poorer health habits than those who drank no coffee.

  • Some heavy alcohol drinkers who also drink coffee regularly have less incidence of liver damage than expected.

  • Another study found that people who drank three to four cups of coffee each day had an 80% lower risk of cirrhosis of the liver and a 25% less chance of contracting colon cancer when compared to drinking no coffee at all.

  • Coffee can cause insomnia, and a common complaint among coffee drinkers is that the caffeine disturbs their sleep.

  • Another study found that non coffee drinkers are five times more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than coffee drinkers and those who drank three to four cups of coffer per day

These are some very interesting facts about the average coffee drinker who drinks three to four cups a day. They have a lower incidence of some problems such as colon cancer and Parkinson’s, while at the same time they have poorer health habits.

The poorer health habits probably stem from grabbing a cup of coffee in the morning as they head out the door rather than sitting and eating a healthy breakfast. Then for lunch, in the middle of a busy day, they might grab another cup of coffee.

Another characteristic is the coffee drinker who has to have something sweet with their coffee. Instead of having an apple or banana for an afternoon coffee break, they have a cup of coffee with a donut. That sounds delicious, but it is not healthy.

Another poor habit is the coffee drinker who drinks to stay awake after being up till late the night before. Getting very little sleep might not seem unhealthy, but it tears down your body’s defenses and leaves you in a weakened condition for an assortment of diseases.

Many coffee drinkers also neglect to drink an adequate amount of water each day. In between coffee cups be sure to get in your eight eight-ounce glasses of water that your body needs each day.

According to these studies, coffee drinkers apparently get some health benefits from coffee. They would get even more benefit if they coupled that with healthy habits such as exercising, eating right, drinking plenty of water, and getting a good sleep.

What Coffee Grinder is Best for You – Blade or Burr

Grinders – Two Basic Types

The perfect cup of coffee depends not only on the bean type and the coffee machine you use but also the machine you use to grind the bean.

Some of the best grinders available today are easy to use and easy to clean up. Most coffee grinders made for home use are simple and easy to operate grinding the coffee beans in a jiffy.

You can choose from a wide variety of coffee grinders available in the market in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In simple terms most coffee grinders will be spilt into two camps – blade grinders and burr grinders.

Coffee grinders improve the taste of coffee because they release the oils and aromas of the coffee beans immediately before you brew your coffee. The best types of coffee grinders that will grind your gourmet coffee beans ideally are burr grinders, but we’ll discuss the blade grinder first.

Blade Grinders

The pros of this method are that blade grinders are affordable. Blade grinders are the most common in home coffee grinders.

Blade grinders use razor sharp blades that spin, grinding the beans in the process. The spinning blades generate heat by the friction of the blade hitting the coffee bean at high speed.

It’s the resulting heat that can cause the problem with blade grinders. The heat actually destroys some of the flavor of the coffee beans.

Burr Grinders

A burr coffee grinder is a coffee grinder that relies on the grinding method to produce ground coffee from coffee beans. For coffee lovers requiring more caffeine, a burr grinder is ideal if you don’t mind the work involved in cleaning the appliance. The conical burr grinder works best in maintaining the aroma and flavor of the coffee.

The down side to a burr grinder is the fact that they are noisy and slow. But you can grind as much or little as you require and get a reliably consistent result.

Also, when brewing espresso the burr coffee grinder supplies uniformly ground coffee that allows for an easier wetting and packing of coffee grounds in the espresso machine. Therefore, the best way to get the real thing is by using a burr coffee grinder.

Conclusion

Whether you decide on a blade grinder to save money or go for a burr grinder for a better tasting coffee, the internet is an excellent place to shop for either one. There you will enjoy a great choice of grinders offering an excellent array of features. Many sites offer reviews of different brands, and many even rate each grinder. It’s also a great way to compare prices.

Cup A Joe: The Health Benefits of Coffee

That miraculous little berry seed, known as the coffee bean, is often the source that wakes up a sleepy world. A 12 oz. cup of regular brew contains 165 mg. of caffeine which carries enough of a nudge to rouse the brain into alertness. A Starbucks tall delivers a whopping 375 mg. jolt that can put many people into overdrive. But there is more to this small berry seed than its caffeine. Scientists are finding that in addition to the effect on the nervous system, the roasted bean is chock-full of antioxidants that are only found in a select number of foods – walnuts, blueberries, artichokes, strawberries, and pecans.

It wasn’t very long ago that coffee was getting a bad rap in the health industry. Studies were conducted to find a correlation between coffee consumption and diseases — pancreatic cancer, osteoporosis, coronary heart disease, mental illness, physical fatigue, and breast cancer. The results have been coming in, and the coffee bean is looking more like a knight than a villain.

After years of research, the World Review of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Journal of Epidemiology found “no conclusive evidence for any increased incidence of caner in ANY organ due to coffee.” In fact, these studies discovered that the individual who consumes more than four cups of coffee per day has a 24 per cent lower risk of colon cancer than the non-coffee drinker.

Another study from the University of Minnesota concluded that consumption of coffee (more than 4 cups per day) actually lowered the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 22 per cent. Their research included more than 28,000 post-menopausal women from 1986 to 1997. Scientists suspect that minerals and compounds in the coffee bean might help the sensitivity of insulin receptors process blood sugar more effectively.

Coffee consumption also seems to have an edge in memory retention. Michael P. McDonald, PhD, assistant professor of pharmacology, noted that lifetime coffee drinkers have better memory than non-coffee drinkers. Scientists are now looking into the effects of coffee as a possible prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

What about the heart? While studies are continuing, recent research is unable at this time to substantiate any correlation of coffee consumption with coronary disease or myocardial infarction. In fact, in a trial by Iowa Women’s Health Study, the conclusion revealed that coffee actually may reduce the risk of inflammatory and cardiovascular disease in post-menopausal women. Also, a recent study of 85,747 women over a ten year period showed a similar conclusion; no connection of coffee use to coronary heart disease.

The health benefits of coffee are also found in alcohol abuse. According to Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Weekly, coffee drinkers are the ones who remain safe from developing liver cirrhosis. A study by Kaiser Permanente shows that the consumption of coffee reduces the chance of developing liver cirrhosis by 80 per cent.

Coffee can also improve our mood, and has a positive influence on our decision-making skills. Drinking that cup of java just might help an individual work through an argument. In a study at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, that is exactly what they discovered. “Caffeine enhances alertness and concentration . . ,” states Pearl Martin, Ph.D., enabling an individual to understand a different point of view during a disagreement.

Want to relieve stress? Coffee is listed as one of the foods that help alleviate anxiety, along with chocolate, yogurt, and chewing gum. Stress inducers, however, are alcoholic drinks and processed junk food.

In order to reap all the benefits from coffee, and lessen any unhealthy effects, the following includes a few facts coffee lovers need to know. First, drinking decaffeinated coffee can raise the LDL – which is the bad cholesterol — by 8 per cent (3 to 6 cups of coffee). The various fats and oils in decaffeinated beans cause this hike in LDL. Therefore, stick with caffeinated coffee. Secondly, stay with standard drip coffee, since the French-press also can increase LDL. If you have heart disease, it is always good to make sure your coffee is filtered rather than made in a plunge pot.

Here’s to coffee, and good health!

The Art Of Coffee Roasting

Posted in Did you know? by
Sep 02 2010
TrackBack Address.

For the most part, Americans stuck to a medium or dark roast, one size fits all kind of coffee through the mid 1980’s. It wasn’t until that time that the coffee craze began to catch on and people began to realize that there is life out there beyond a cup of Folgers’ coffee in the morning. In fact, broadening your coffee experience can greatly enhance your morning routine if you give it a chance.

One way that people are doing that is by roasting their own coffee beans. We’ve learned over the years that the fresher your coffee is the better it tastes in your cup. This doesn’t only apply to coffee that is freshly brewed but also beans that are freshly roasted, and then freshly ground. Your morning coffee is only as good as the beans from which it began its journey to your cup.

Roasting your own coffee beans in this country has become a hobby for many and a passion for some. While there are all kinds of gadgets and gizmos that enable you to roast your own coffee quite effortlessly, there are those that consider it not really roasting your own coffee if you are not suffering for the sake of your art. I, however, am not one of those people. I like convenience and am a member of the modern age of coffee drinking by choice rather than accident.

As a thoroughly modern coffee drinking girl of the new millennium, I am all for the convenience that certain coffee roasting equipment affords. This is not my first choice, however, for my first cup of coffee in the morning. The good news is that you can store about three days worth of roasted beans without worrying about loosing freshness. This means that those who aren’t quite prepared to get up early enough on any given weekday morning to roast their own beans may still have a great and fresh tasting cup of coffee.

I recommend that you do your research and find a coffee roaster that suits your style. If you are a god or goddess of domesticity then by all means go the old fashion route with a cookie tray and a preheated oven. If you are domestically reluctant you might actually do well with a mid range coffee roaster. If you are domestically handicapped however, you might want to look into the full service coffee roasters. These simply ask you how you want it and they make all the pertinent decisions.

Roasting your own coffee though is a great way to experience many different types of roasts in order to make educated decisions as to what your true favorite is when it comes to coffee. Roasting coffee is very different from adding flavor or drinking gourmet coffee. When you roast coffee you are literally affecting the bean of the coffee rather than simply adding something to the coffee. When you roast coffee yourself you are affecting big change in the flavor. It’s a great way to allow yourself to try new things if nothing else.

Roasting coffee truly is an art form to those dedicated enough to do it by hand. For the rest of us, there is wonderful equipment that can keep us on track and on target for a great cup of coffee that has been roasted to perfection at just the perfect degree for our delicate palates.

Understanding The Types Of Coffee Grinders

Posted in Did you know? by
Sep 01 2010

The first step in creating incomparable coffee in your home of office is to grind the coffee beans yourself. Freshly ground coffee has had less of a chance to oxidize, and thus the flavor is preserved. If you’ve walked past a busy coffee shop, you’ll notice the strong aroma of freshly ground and prepared coffee. Nothing beats it, and this freshness contributes to the flavor of the final cup.

Finding a coffee grinder that will prepare the quality beverage you’re after is another matter though. It helps to understand the different types of grinders available, as they produce quite varying qualities of brewed coffee.

There are three ways to grind coffee. Blade grinders, which chop up the coffee beans, are the most common in home coffee grinders. They have advantages in that they are longer lasting, and quite cheap to buy compared with other grinder methods. But this trade-off is apparent in the type of ground coffee they produce.

One of the key principles in producing quality coffee grinds is that the size of the grind is even. Unfortunately, blade grinders don’t perform well here. They produce both large and small particles of coffee, as well as a type of ‘coffee dust’ that can clog up sieves in French presses and espresso machines. The coffee they produce is generally poorer in quality because the lack of uniform particle size means that the brewing method selected is unable to work optimally. Some of the coffee beans will be perfect for it, and thus the full flavor will be extracted, but a lot of it won’t, as the beans are too large or small.

Whilst the effect of coffee grind particles that are too large may seem obvious, in that flavor is left in the ground, a grind that is too fine will also contribute to poor coffee. Bitter coffee results when the surface area has been exposed to hot water for too long.

By far the best method for most types of coffee is the burr grinder. These grinders are used in coffee shops, and they produce a very even grind. There is a range of settings that can be used, so that espresso, French press, drip coffee, and percolators can be used to make the final cup. Burr grinders have another advantage in that there is less heat to change the taste of the coffee bean. Blade grinders tend to produce more heat.

The third way of grinding coffee is particular to making Turkish coffee. A very finely ground coffee is needed, and only very good quality burr grinders are able to do this. The alternative is the old fashioned mortar and pestle!

The best type of coffee grinder is the conical burr grinder, but these are also the most expensive. What is best for an individual’s needs will depend on how much they love their coffee, and their budget.

For an unusual addition to your kitchen, try an antique coffee grinder. For more coffee help, click here.

Jamaican Coffee

Jamaican coffee is one of the most expensive, classy and sought-after coffees in the entire world. It comes from the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Jamaica blue mountain coffee is sheltered internationally as an officially recognized trademark implying that only coffee qualified by the ‘Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica’ can be branded as such. It comes from an established cultivating region in the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica, and its nurturing is supervised by the ‘Coffee Industry Board.’

To be called Jamaican coffee, the beans are required to grow above 2000 feet and normally, the Jamaican coffee plantations grow above 5000 feet all over the region. The higher the elevation of the plantation, the higher is the value, quality and demand of the coffee. The most preferred Jamaica coffee is roasted on an open fire in a pan.

Coffee connoisseurs describe Jamaican coffee as rich and savory, with low acidity, a tinge of sweetness and a bold aroma. A pound of this coffee in a coffee shop usually costs around $45. In Jamaica, it costs from $15 – $25 per pound. Other types of Jamaican coffee include High Mountain Supreme, Jamaica Prime and Jamaica Select. These are also as famous as the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee. Jamaican coffee is in a class all by itself in the world of coffee. While Italian coffee makes up most of the widely used types of coffee, Jamaican coffee is the most widely desired. Sadly, most coffee lovers can’t afford it.

The Jamaican Coffee has also done wonders to the Jamaican government by increasing exports in huge bounds. Many countries have attempted cultivating similar coffee plantations, but there is no comparison to the original Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica.

Whole Bean Coffee – Yum

When it comes to coffee, there are so many variations and options that it can almost be overwhelming. But if you want a rich, pure cup of coffee, then you’ve undoubtedly discovered for yourself that whole bean coffee is the best option. The best coffee is the freshest coffee, and whole bean coffee is the freshest you can get. Pre-ground coffee has been sitting for anything from a couple of days to many months, and it’s just not the same as brewing a cup of coffee immediately after grinding the beans. Even cheaper whole bean coffee blends taste good if you grind the beans and brew the coffee straight afterwards.

If you have the opportunity to buy good whole bean coffee in bulk, then it’s worth freezing the unopened bags. This helps keep them fresh for even longer. Of course, there is a downside to whole bean coffee – you have to grind the beans. For most of us that means buying a coffee grinder. If you’re in a hurry, it can be annoying to have to take the extra step of grinding the beans, but once you sit down with that beautiful cup of coffee you’ll forget the extra time it took to prepare it. The euphoria may even carry you right through the task of cleaning the coffee grinder!

The reality is that whole bean coffee isn’t an instant coffee fix – it takes time to get that perfect cup of coffee. So if flavor isn’t really of top importance to you, or you’re lacking time or patience, then you may be better off sticking with instant coffee varieties. Most people, unfortunately, can’t get past the instant gratification approach of today’s society, and chucking a spoonful of coffee into a cup and pouring in hot water is about as instant as it gets.

Still, there are ways around this. When I want to make a fresh cup of coffee, I grind the beans and put the coffee onto brew. Then, as the coffee grinder is already on the bench, I grind some extra beans and store the resulting coffee in an airtight jar. Sometimes it’s handy to be able to pull out pre-ground beans for a quick cup of coffee. Maybe it’s not quite as good, but sometimes I’m willing to sacrifice a little bit of flavor to gain some time.

The Art of Coffee Making

There are specific and significant components to making good coffee, and to all coffee lovers out there, this should be taken seriously. Okay, it’s just coffee, but people, Americans especially, are drinking a lot of it, so why not brew coffee to the best of its potential? People all over the world are simply doing it wrong! The steps to brewing a better cup of coffee are so simple that there’s no reason why you shouldn’t try them out and see if you’re satisfied with the results. All you have to lose is one pot of coffee, and that’s only if you decide you don’t like it and end up pouring it down the drain.

The factors of coffee making that you need to consider are the grind of your beans versus the type of coffee maker you are using, the water, the measurements of coffee versus measurements of water, and the freshness of your coffee bean. You may wonder what could be so important about any of these things, but they are simply the fundamentals of coffee making.

What type of coffee maker you are using will determine how coarse or fine your grind needs to be. The coarsest grind is used with French presses, and the finest grind is used with espresso makers. When grinding your coffee, simply follow the guide on the grinder or in the manual, or ask someone who would know how coarse or fine of a grind you need for your specific coffee maker.

Since brewed coffee is 98% water, then you should use clean and fresh purified water. Also, the water should be no less than 190 degrees and no more than 205 degrees for the brewing. Between those temperatures, the water will better extract the full flavor of the bean. Water that is too hot will result in coffee that has a burnt taste.

It is very important that you accurately measure the amount of coffee and water that you use. Normally you can be sure to do this correctly by simply reading the directions on your container of coffee. Generally, though, good coffee is brewed with two tablespoons of coffee per every six ounces of water. If this produces coffee that is too strong for your liking, then the best thing to do is add hot water (between 190-205 degrees) after it is brewed. This way you maintain the invigorating flavor, but at a milder strength.

The last, but not least, important factor to brewing great coffee is the freshness of your coffee bean. Grinding your beans right before you brew them truly helps make a fresher cup of coffee. Even if you don’t do that, though, you can keep your coffee fresher by storing it in the refrigerator or freezer.

Maybe you didn’t know that your coffee could taste better, but now you do. If coffee is what you wake up to every morning, or if you drink it throughout the day, you owe it to yourself to make it as good as it can be.

A Whole Lotta Latte Coffee

Can you imagine starting the day without a cup of hot coffee to perk you up? A breakfast get-together with friends or an early business meeting will not be complete without mugs of coffee being passed around.

Coffee if one of the most popular beverages in the world. Its origin can be traced back centuries ago, from Ethiopa where it made its way onto Egypt and Europe. From then on, the preparation of coffee has become a tradition as well as a craze in the modern pop culture.

This stimulant drink is made of coffee beans, roasted to perfection and blended into the perfect hot or cold drink. There are basically two kinds of coffee plants: Robusta and Arabica.

Arabica is the older kind of coffee, which many think tastes better than the other variant.

Robusta, which contains almost half as much caffeine as an Arabica is much bitter tasting than its predecessor.

A lot of farmers in Central America, Africa, and Asian countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia depend on coffee planting as their main source of livelihood. Brazil is the largest coffee-producing country in the world.

Here is a quick run-through on how this addicting beverage is prepared:

1. Coffee plants are grown and once they mature enough, they are picked and harvested.

2. Once the coffee beans or coffee cherries are picked, they are sorted and dried. This is where the term ‘first pick’ came from.

3. After the coffee beans are sorted, they are either dried or aged, depending on the variety of coffee.

4. Then, the beans are either roasted or ground to make instant coffee, or the beans are sold by themselves for coffee to be made in your own home.

There are a thousand and one ways to prepare your coffee. You can use instant coffee and dissolve it in hot water for a quick, reviving cup during a long day.

It can also be prepared using the good old coffee machine where ground coffee is steeped through a paper filter, combined with hot water, to come up with the perfect brew.

There is also the more complicated espresso machines, which give the drinkers an added punch to their caffeine fix. These machines combine steam or boiling water with the ground coffee beans to produce a stronger aroma and flavor.

‘Go Loco over Latte Coffee’

When you go to any establishment specializing in coffee preparation, if you are not a coffee enthusiast, you might get confused with the unique language.

Terms like espresso, macchiato, java, espresso, shot, skim, whip, dry and foam are casually thrown around. They all relate to one’s personal preference on how they like to take their daily caffeine fix.

Café latte is one popular flavor of gourmet coffee.

This refreshing drink has three layers. First, one serving of espresso is poured over the cup or mug. This is followed by a generous serving of steamed milk. Lastly, a spoonful or more of foamed milk or cream adds the final touch to the perfect cup of café latte.

No matter how you prefer to take your coffee, be it black, with cream, or gourmet like cafe latte with all the exquisite and creamy toppings, there is no doubt that this beverage’s popularity will not wane anytime soon.

To Be or Not To Be: The Best Gourmet Coffee

Posted in Did you know? by

The best gourmet coffee is not always just a matter of popular opinion. As with any other aspect of life, the best things are not always simplistically easy. If you want a good gourmet coffee, almost anyone can do that. If you want only the best gourmet coffee, then you have quite the chore in the road ahead.

To respect the best gourmet coffees in the world, you must understand some of the interesting history associated with that famous coffee bean. Coffee has a history that spans well before 1000 AD. A tribe in Ethiopia discovered that by grinding up a certain red berry, mixing the powder with animal lard, and eating the mixture, that people received quite the energy boost. Around that same time, Arabs relocated those little red berries to their homeland and quickly cultivated the berries on their plantations. After Arabs boiled the beans, they would drink a concoction called “kahway” or “that which prevents sleep”. Perhaps “kahway” is most recognizable when I say it is the Arab word for “coffee”. In 1645, Italy opens the first, official coffee shop. Before long, coffee replaced the long time winner of the breakfast beverage of the world: beer. As you can see, coffee has a rich history in the culture of the world.

Surprisingly, there are only two species of coffee: Arabic and Robust. All the best gourmet coffees are always created from the Arabic species: Arabic is considered the superior coffee species. Arabic coffee requires a greater elevation than does Robust. In addition, all but a quarter of the coffee grown around the world is Arabic. Robust coffee is grown in a moisture-rich environment such as those offered in tropical areas. As is obvious, Arabic is a drying coffee than is the Robust.

The best gourmet coffee is indeed a matter of opinion. However, many factors are decided long before the consumer is served that final cup of rich java. Many gourmet coffees have specialty flavorings added directly to the coffee bean immediately following the roasting process. When the coffee bean is warm, the infusion of additives is much easier. There are a large number of options when considering what to do with that coffee bean. However, only the best, high quality coffee beans are used in the creation of gourmet coffee.

Coffee manufacturers, coffee shops, and coffee retailers all want to make you, the consumer, happy. They want to see you come back for more. By creating good gourmet coffee, a few specially selected coffees gain the title of the best gourmet coffee in the world. Of course, there is more than one. You may ask yourself: how can this be? Well, what is the best gourmet coffee for one person may not be for the next person. Everyone’s taste is uniquely there own. When a gourmet coffee is simply the best, they have discovered the secret of benefiting a great number of people. Do not be surprised by the options available when selecting your coffee. Just follow your nose and take a sip or two.

The Coffee Green Specialty Retailers: The Daily Grind Perks Us Up

Gourmet coffee retailers know what their customers want. It is there job. If they didn’t know how to better reach their customers, they would miss out on their chunk of $18 billion spent annually on coffee and coffee products. Of course not one coffee fits every drinker. If it did, the coffee industry would be boring and lack imagination. Everyone would drink a slightly watered down coffee somewhere between decaf and regular. Thank goodness that all coffee drinkers enjoy a slightly different brew. Of all the coffee types, perhaps the most unique and rare is the coffee green specialty bean. This rarity is none the less tasty, but not as well known or as popular. However, as coffee drinkers grow more finicky and more demanding, perhaps one of the easiest things to go is to go green.

Going “green” is actually not as complicated or demanding as it may sound. A coffee green specialty retailer will help of course. Finding one of those is easy. However, finding a reputable one may be more difficult; then finding one you are comfortable with is a test of stamina and patience. What does “going green” actually mean? Well, if you go green, you are actually deciding to buy your specialty coffee bean green or not roasted. A green coffee bean means it is hand picked and then shipped. No roasting, no processing: what you get is a raw coffee bean. Then you choose how to roast and process the coffee bean once you receive the delicate marvel. Whether you choose to buy the syrups and additives for creating your own flavored coffee, or just roast the coffee bean naturally, the taste is the ultimate reward.

Now let’s investigate popular methods to finding a good coffee green specialty retailer. As is a popular form of media these days, the Internet is also a prime location to find a green merchant. What you look for will be essential in finding a reputable and worthwhile green merchant. Take a look at the contact. Do they have a web site? If so: what does that web site look like? Do not forget to check the better business bureau and other certifications granted by local and national governments of the coffee bean farmers home country. Do not be duped though. There may be ways to verify the information. If you can do so, do so. When shipping to your home country from other countries, please be aware of importation laws and more importantly, the fees associated with importing produce. It may seem a great deal to purchase a pound of green coffee beans for only a few dollars, but if the importation fee for your country is triple the cost, you will be paying a whole lot more than you thought.

Green coffee beans offer the true coffee connoisseur the opportunity to create and design a coffee blend perfected to his or her own tastes. On the other hand, green coffee beans allow coffee retailers to produce their own specialty coffee flavorings and styles. Then they can label those coffee beans. When you get a bag of coffee beans or ground from that gourmet coffee shop, it may be worthwhile to ask what the base coffee bean actually is. Anyway you look at it, green coffee beans often save the buyer money, but in the end, all green coffee beans offer the drinker an enhanced coffee experience.

Gourmet Coffee: Society’s Modern Elixir

Posted in Did you know? by

Coffee: the get-up-and-go juice of men and women around the world; the elixir every insomniac worships; and the drinkable oil that greases the cogs of our restless mind. Whatever coffee means to you, no one will argue that coffee has deep roots in the culture of our society. Coffee can bring two distinctively opposite individuals together in a ranting, super-charged explosion of camaraderie only describable as totally remarkable and inspiring. No one would dare deny that a good cup of gourmet coffee is one rung higher on that latter of inspired preeminence than an average blend of coffee.

What makes an average coffee better than average or gourmet coffee? This simple question is not so simple to answer. The process starts with a single, little, dark bean. However, that bean has an awe-inspiring story itself. The quality of a coffee bean depends vastly on where and how that particular coffee bean is grown. The cultivation process is as important as the elevation, temperature, and weather of the surrounding area of the coffee bean. Of course, the temperature and weather of the surrounding area is subject to continuous change; therefore, the quality of a coffee bean is going to change from year to year.

Not surprisingly, coffee beans are handpicked and handled with extreme care to produce the highest quality possible. After the coffee bean has reached the processor’s plant, the coffee bean is separated, then is prepared for immediate roasting. The roasting process heats the coffee bean to an extremely high temperature. The longer the coffee bean is kept in the extreme heat, the darker the roast of the coffee beans. The darker the coffee bean, the less caffeine the coffee bean generates in that everyday cup of java. In addition, the darker the coffee bean is in the end, the less weight that coffee bean actually weighs. Surprisingly, Europeans enjoy a darker coffee blend than the American consumers.

Immediately after being removed from the extreme temperature of the roasting process, coffee beans are exceptionally absorbent. This is the most popular time to add additional flavorings and additives that make a good gourmet coffee. Of course, there are enormous optional factors to any gourmet coffee. Now we are going to explore these options and discuss in detail the enormous possibilities associated with gourmet coffees. Grab yourself a cup of java, relax, and let’s walk, hop, or skip down this explorative path of truth as we explore the phenomenon of gourmet coffee!

Why Connoisseurs Choose a Burr Coffee Grinder

Posted in Did you know? by
Aug 28 2010
TrackBack Address.

Wouldn’t you like your coffee the way it was meant to be? The best way to get the real thing is by using a burr coffee grinder.

You may have thought that all coffee grinders are alike; as long as they grind the coffee that’s all there is to it right? Wrong! It makes a big difference to your taste buds. There are two key types of coffee bean grinder (the burr coffee grinder and the blade grinder) and you want to make the right choice. You see, blade coffee grinders have spinning blades that generate heat by the friction of blade hitting coffee bean at high speed. That’s not good. It’s actually rather sad because the heat kills the flavoids in your coffee beans. We love those flavoids, in fact some of us are addicted to them, so we will do everything we can to preserve them. We will therefore only consider the burr coffee grinder here as our quest is for the perfect cup of java.

With the burr coffee grinder, the coffee beans are loaded into a holding hopper which feeds them into the bean grinding mechanism, or burr’s as they are known. The burrs provide a slow grinding of the coffee beans which is perfect for best results. The burr coffee grinder then directs the ground coffee into a holding pot ready for brewing. There are also some models that will send your ground coffee directly into the coffee filter.

The main advantage of a burr coffee grinder is that it delivers a more consistent fineness of grain in the coffee grounds which is very important in achieving the most flavor from the coffee brewing process. Another advantage of the burr coffee grinder is that it can operate at slower speeds so your coffee beans are not subject to heat buildup as they are being ground.

You really must go for the trifecta to create the quintessential cup of coffee. That is the best coffee beans plus the best grinding process plus the best brewing procedure. Oh yes and it’s also important to use the coffee grinds within two weeks as our good friends the flavoids start to deteriorate with time.

So if you’re over the instant ‘plastic coffee’ syndrome, get yourself a burr coffee grinder and start enjoying the sensual aromas of a real ‘caught in the moment’ experience. You can pick up a great deal on a burr coffee grinder from the many coffee specialty stores online. So if you’re convinced that the burr is the way to go, then it’s time to do some product comparison research. I think you will find that the added expense of a burr coffee grinder will pay dividends for years to come. After all, this is an investment in your lifestyle, not just a cup of coffee.

Coffee Drink Recipes From Around The World

Coffee is the second most imported commodity in today’s world, right behind petroleum. This beverage has become so popular that many coffee-derivative drinks have been produced and consumed for years. Below are a few common coffee drink recipes.

The first drink would, of course, be coffee. Grown all around the world but especially in Ethiopia, the Middle East, Columbia and Brazil, coffee seeds are harvested, dried, and then roasted. The process in preparation is complex, but the coffee drink recipe for coffee is simple: Coffee beans, consisting of caffeine and a variety of oils indigenous to the particular environment in which the beans are harvested.

One coffee drink, called “Ca Phe Sua,” popular in Vietnam comes in two variations “Ca Phe Sua Da” (“coffee, milk, and ice”) and “Ca Phe Sua Nong” (coffee and milk hot”). The coffee drink recipe for the first consists of the simple process of blending dark French Roast with a quarter to half percent of condensed milk and then pouring, through a small drip filter, over ice. The coffee drink recipe for the second is similar, but ice is withheld, leaving only hot “Ca Phe Sua.”

The famous and widely consumed Espresso, invented and developed in Italy and popular all over Europe, has a wide array of coffee drink recipes. Only a couple of them are described here.

A formal Italian Espresso is made by forcing moderately hot water through high pressure (nine to ten atmospheres, or bars) into extremely fine-ground coffee to create a drink thicker in consistency than regular coffee and composed of a variety of vegetable oils, proteins, sugars, and reddish-brown foam called Crema.

Espresso has very little water. The coffee drink recipe for Caffe’ Americano (“American Coffee”), an American version of Espresso, has a higher degree of water and is made similar to the drip-brew fashion.

The coffee drink recipe for Latte (Italian for “milk”) is a simple one: “Café a Latte, meaning “Coffee and Milk,” consists of one-third Espresso and two-thirds steamed milk, poured together simultaneously into either side of the drinking cup. Café’ Lattes typically have foam floating on top.

The Frappaccino is a popular drink sold by the Starbucks coffee chain. This coffee drink recipe is as follows: one-part soluble coffee is blended with water, which in turn is mixed with a one-part proprietary liquid comprised of milk, sugar substances, and caramel flavoring and then finally with ice. A Frappaccino has a milkshake consistency, a strong coffee flavor, and is chilled before drinking.

All of these and many other coffee drink recipes are available on the Internet or in various recipe books. For those who love coffee, these coffee drink recipes will leave mouths watering!

Brewing Coffee

Posted in Did you know? by
Aug 27 2010
TrackBack Address.

When brewing coffee the ratio of ground coffee to water is vital. Generally the rule is 1 standard coffee scoop (2 tablespoons) of ground coffee to every 6 ounces of water. The only problem here is that coffee scoops can vary in capacity. The ideal way is to measure the capacity of your coffee scoop and adjust your subsequent coffee measurements accordingly. If weaker coffee is preferred then the 2 to 6 rule applies. Make it full strength and then dilute to taste with hot water or milk.

There are many ways to brew coffee but a percolator should not be one of them. Percolators violate two of the fundamental rules of good coffee brewing. They boil the coffee which extracts bitter and sour substances that should play no part in coffee and they pour water that is too hot over the grounds repeatedly. The water should be just right and poured only once.

There are many recommended methods of brewing a good cup of coffee.

The filter cone method involves pouring the hot water through ground coffee that has been measured into a filter set inside a cone. Over recent years this method has become increasingly popular. Connoisseurs prefer to use gold-washed metal filters but paper filters are convenient and easy to use.

Electric Drip machines operate in much the same fashion as manual filter cones except that they pour water over the coffee electrically from a pre-measured reservoir. The flat-bottomed cupcake shaped filters are thought to allow the water to saturate the ground coffee more evenly than the cone shaped filters.

The commonest version of the Metal drip pot is the old-fashioned stovetop pot divided from top to bottom into chambers for hot water, ground coffee and brewed coffee. These are excellent and produce coffee, which is full in flavor and body.

Plunger Pots or French Press Pots operate in a unique manner. The course ground coffee is placed into the pot. Hot water is then added and the grounds are left to steep. Then a metal screen attached to a plunger is slowly pushed down forcing the coffee grounds to the bottom of the pot. This coffee has a thick texture and is particularly appropriate to the flavors of dark roasted coffees.

Espresso coffee is fast becoming popular and the term espresso refers to the brewing method and not a coffee bean. This method gives the fullest bodied coffee by far. Espresso machines force hot (not boiling) water through finely ground coffee at high pressure.

Almost certainly every nation of the eastern Mediterranean brew coffee with a very simple method which is though to have originated in the coffee houses of Cairo in the fifteenth century. Very finely ground, sweetened coffee is lightly boiled several times in a medieval looking long handles brass or copper vessel called a cezve in Turkish and ibrik or briki in Greek. Although the coffee is not filtered the grounds stay in the bottom of the pot but some sediments will find there way into the cup where it sinks to the bottom and remains.
