There is something so relaxing and lazy about sitting at a table having an aromatic cup of coffee. It is hard to stop at one cup that is for certain. However, coffee isn’t what it used to be. Since gourmet coffee has hit the shelves it is not longer just something to you do just to perk you up in the morning, it something you drink to enjoy the taste and irresistible flavor of these incredibly made coffees.

People who do not drink coffee often wonder what is so great about gourmet coffee. They ask whether it is made a certain way or it is the taste that lures you in. In fact, it is both reasons. Gourmet coffee is made from very high quality ‘Arabica’ coffee beans that are hand picked and thoroughly checked over to makes sure they are superior. Unlike commercial coffees that are machine graded, people that are experienced in gourmet coffee beans will be able to see if there is any dirt, leaves, or anything else in the beans that will spoil the taste.

The gourmet coffee beans are then treated with special oils after the roasting process which is what gives it the special flavor that is so tempting to drink. It is a blend of natural oils that are used for the coffee bean treatment. The oils and the flavors neutralize each other so you get a very smooth taste without any overpowering blend.

Gourmet coffee is then roasted in a way that customizes the coffee for your taste. Using a light roast, you will contain the natural aroma without the overcooked taste that you find in many of the traditional coffees. Arabic coffee beans are ground perfect fineness to give you the best taste that you can have in a full bodied cup of coffee. There are gourmet coffees that use a more coarser grind to give a completely different taste. It is up to your personal preference as to which level of fineness gives you the best cup of coffee.

Finer grinds are similar to those found in espresso which has a great rich taste, but most gourmet coffee lovers will lean towards the coarse ground coffee powder. That gives the grinds time to mix with the hot water and really pull out the flavor completely, especially when made with drip type filters. What makes Arabica gourmet coffee so great is that the Arabica coffee beans are never stored in a warehouse so after harvesting, roasting, and grinding they go very quickly to the store in which you buy them.

The best gourmet coffee is not always just a matter of popular opinion. As with any other aspect of life, the best things are not always simplistically easy. If you want a good gourmet coffee, almost anyone can do that. If you want only the best gourmet coffee, then you have quite the chore in the road ahead.

To respect the best gourmet coffees in the world, you must understand some of the interesting history associated with that famous coffee bean. Coffee has a history that spans well before 1000 AD. A tribe in Ethiopia discovered that by grinding up a certain red berry, mixing the powder with animal lard, and eating the mixture, that people received quite the energy boost. Around that same time, Arabs relocated those little red berries to their homeland and quickly cultivated the berries on their plantations. After Arabs boiled the beans, they would drink a concoction called “kahway” or “that which prevents sleep”. Perhaps “kahway” is most recognizable when I say it is the Arab word for “coffee”. In 1645, Italy opens the first, official coffee shop. Before long, coffee replaced the long time winner of the breakfast beverage of the world: beer. As you can see, coffee has a rich history in the culture of the world.

Surprisingly, there are only two species of coffee: Arabic and Robust. All the best gourmet coffees are always created from the Arabic species: Arabic is considered the superior coffee species. Arabic coffee requires a greater elevation than does Robust. In addition, all but a quarter of the coffee grown around the world is Arabic. Robust coffee is grown in a moisture-rich environment such as those offered in tropical areas. As is obvious, Arabic is a drying coffee than is the Robust.

The best gourmet coffee is indeed a matter of opinion. However, many factors are decided long before the consumer is served that final cup of rich java. Many gourmet coffees have specialty flavorings added directly to the coffee bean immediately following the roasting process. When the coffee bean is warm, the infusion of additives is much easier. There are a large number of options when considering what to do with that coffee bean. However, only the best, high quality coffee beans are used in the creation of gourmet coffee.

Coffee manufacturers, coffee shops, and coffee retailers all want to make you, the consumer, happy. They want to see you come back for more. By creating good gourmet coffee, a few specially selected coffees gain the title of the best gourmet coffee in the world. Of course, there is more than one. You may ask yourself: how can this be? Well, what is the best gourmet coffee for one person may not be for the next person. Everyone’s taste is uniquely there own. It traveled to Turkey from Yemen and from Turkey it became known in Greece. It became so popular that people started calling it “Greek coffee” instead of Turkish (or Arabic) coffee.

Differences

Usually Greek coffee gets roasted lighter than traditional Turkish coffee.

Another difference is that Greeks rarely add spices to their coffee.

How to make Greek coffee

The basic ingredient needed for a delicious Greek coffee is fresh roasted coffee, ground to an extra fine coffee powder (finer than espresso). You can also grind you own coffee beans using a traditional Greek coffee grinder or a modern high quality burr grinder.

Like Turkish coffee in order to make Greek coffee you basically bring a mixture of water and ground coffee almost to boil. Although Turkish people boil their coffee usually 3-4 times Greeks prefer boiling it 1-3 times.

The blends used to make Greek coffee have usually a high percentage of Brazilian coffees, and also some Robusta or a “secret” ingredient to add some more flavour (Colombian coffee, Ethiopia Harrar or Yemen Mocha).

In order to make Greek coffee we need a coffee pot known as briki in Greece. This special Greek coffee pot has a characteristic narrow top which facilitates the correct slow brewing of Turkish coffee and the forming of the famous “kaimaki”, which is basically the crema-froth on top of the coffee.

Traditionally these pots were made of copper or brass, but nowadays they are mass produced using stainless steel which is more durable. (I still prefer the brass ibriks for lots of reasons…). Use the proper size coffee pot to make better coffee and better froth. If you are going to make two demitasse cups of coffee use a 2-cups size coffee pot. If you use a much larger sized pot, crema forming will be much harder.

For one cup of coffee, fill the coffee pot with one demitasse cup of cold water, 1-2 teaspoons of Greek coffee, sugar to taste, and then put the pot on low fire. It is very important to use low fire and cold water to extract more flavor from the coffee. Use a gas stove-top or preferably a traditional tabletop burner.

Once the mixture comes almost to a boil and the foam covers the top, pour it into a demitasse cup slowly. You must do this slowly in order to retain the crema layer (froth) on top. If you fail to remove the coffee pot from fire on time, the coffee mixture will foam up quickly and it will get spilled everywhere! Be careful to not let this happen!

Small tip if you want to make two cups or more

There is an old trick used to maximize the froth on top of every demitasse cup, which basically involves taking the froth with a teaspoon from the coffee pot and then adding it to each demitasse cup, before pouring the coffee.

Serving

Traditionally the coffee is served using decorative discs, in small demitasse cups made of fine porcelain.

You can also pair Greek coffee with a nice desert like cookies (“koulourakia”), “halva” or “baklava”.

Things to notice

Some people bring the coffee to boil only once. Other people prefer twice and there are also some people who argue that bringing the coffee to boil three times is the absolute minimum.

Another point of argument is the stirring. Some people stir coffee, water and sugar only in the beginning and some other stir continuously till the end to make more froth.

Personal opinion

I prefer to stir the coffee continuously till the end and I also let it foam up twice.

“Why?” you may ask. It is just my taste! You can experiment and find what you like best.

Beans

Great-tasting coffee starts with the best beans and a good coffee grinder. The burr type of grinder is the best. It can operate at slower speeds so your coffee beans are not subject to heat buildup as they are being ground.

With good coffee beans, a burr grinder, and an above average coffee maker, you can make a great cup of coffee at home that equals anything bought at a coffee house. The only other expense you will experience is any syrups or creamers you choose to put in. You’ll still be saving a lot of money by making your coffee at home.

What are the best beans to buy? What’s the difference between arabica and robusta, the two basic coffee species?

Arabica

There are two basic coffee variants: one is the traditional arabica, and the other is robusta coffee.

The shrubs that produce arabica coffee beans were said to have been planted by the descendants of the Queen of Sheba, who came from Ethiopia, where Coffea arabica originates. Arabica beans tend to have less caffeine and milder flavor than robusta. In fact robusta coffee beans have twice the caffeine.

Arabica coffee beans are considered to be superior in quality than robusta. All gourmet coffee beans are created from selected Arabic coffee beans.

Robusta

Robusta is used as an inexpensive substitute for arabica in commercial coffee blends and in almost all instant coffee products. Robusta of finer quality are used in espresso blends for a foamy effect and for better affordability.

High quality robusta is also used to blend espresso for more bite, and to lower costs. Robusta can be grown in climates and environments were arabica would not be profitable.

Not all robusta coffee is less expensive. Some robusta blends include the very popular Jamaican Blue Mountain and the Hawaiian Kona coffees which are so much in demand that they command a higher price.

Most Italian coffee is brewed very strong from the lower quality robusta bean, which might suggest why Italy gave us such innovations as cappuccino (coffee with steamed milk) and flavored coffees

Conclusion

There’s more to enjoying a good cup of coffee than grinding some beans, throwing them into a coffee maker, and drinking the result. To be able to truly enjoy a cup of coffee, start with a burr coffee grinder, an above-average coffee maker, and experiment with different flavors and blends of the best gourmet coffee.

One of the most famous substances that coffee is known for is caffeine. Caffeine is one of nature’s natural stimulants. Decaf gourmet coffee comes in most of the same options and choices as the regular coffee beans. Many people notice a unique, different taste associated with decaf gourmet coffee. However, many people agree that the unique features contained within gourmet decaf coffee bring a pleasant and refreshing change. Those that enjoy a truly good cup of coffee, get the coffee without the stimulating factors associated with regular coffee. Deciding to try decaf coffee is an opportunity to try something unique. Although decaf coffee is similar to regular coffee, the difference is more evident to many coffee drinkers. Drinking decaf may take time to adjust too.

Decaf coffee is usually sold along side regular coffee in all retail shops. The specialty coffees are commonly in both regular and decaf as well.
