If you want to drink coffee then the numbers of choices you have are rather limitless. The only limit that your are subject to is what you prefer and what you don’t. Different types of coffee shops have their own different types and blends of coffee available. These coffee shops also have a number of available specialty coffee drinks.

To make an order the first thing that you would need to do is select a drink size of coffee. The person who serves you coffee will usually take the time out to ask if you’d rather have a short, tall, grand or venti. These sizes are usually 8oz, 12 oz, 16oz and 20 oz respectively.

People who are ordering drip coffee can take milk and sugar along with their order. The choices of milk available are another thing entirely. You can opt for different types of milk such as frothed milk which is rather thick, steamed milk, breve, wet or panna which is whipped cream.

After your choice of milk, the next thing you need to decide is whether you want a latte, mocha or if you prefer a cappuccino. A latte is actually an espresso with steamed milk added. A cappuccino is actually a mixture of three things in equal parts : steamed milk, an espresso and frothed milk. A mocha on the other hand is a latte or cappuccino that has chocolate syrup added to it.

These are some of the specialty coffee drinks that you can by from a coffee shop. Some of the different names listed here may differ in the particular coffee shops that you visit for a whole lot of reasons

  • Espresso Con Panna – This is an espresso shot that is mixed with whipped cream
  • Double Dry Short – This is a double shot of espresso which is in short cup and which has no foam

  • Doppio – This is a double shot of espresso coffee drink
  • Caffe Cubano – This is shot of espresso that is heavily sweetened
  • Quad – This is an Espresso drink that is made with four shots of coffee
  • Split shot – This is an Espresso shot with half the caffeine
  • Caffe Americano – This is a single shot of espresso that has 6 to 8 ounces of hot water added to it.
  • Ristretto – This is a restricted shot of espresso which is also called a short pull. While brewing this sort of coffee a whole lot less water is allowed to pass through the coffee grounds. The makes a flavor of coffee that is rather intense.
  • Lungo – This is an extra long pull. During the brewing process of making a Lunho, twice as much water is allowed to pass through the coffee grounds.
  • Dry – This is an Espresso that is made with small amount of foam and no steamed milk added
  • Chairo – This is an Espresso drink that is made “clear” by the addition of more milk
  • Caffe Medici – This is Doppio that is poured over chocolate syrup and orange peel, and finally topped off with whipped cream
  • Frappe – This is a coffee drink that is created along with ice cream and milk
  • Shot in the Dark (aka Redeye) – This is an espresso shot that is made in a coffee cup and then rest of cup filled up with drip coffee
  • Café Breva – This is Cappuccino coffee made with Half & Half rather than whole milk
  • Café Mocha – This is Cappuccino coffee that has chocolate syrup added to it
  • Caffe Mochaccino – This is Cappuccino coffee that has chocolate syrup added to it.

All these different types of coffee make it hard to select one type of coffee over the other. When you find it hard to decide you can always try a demitasse instead. This word is simply the French word for “half glass”. In coffee terms this usually entails a very small cup of coffee. You can continue trying until you find your pick.

    French press: This brewer looks like a pitcher and you can quickly make your coffee drink here. It saves a lot of space in the kitchen as it is handy and not spacious to keep.

    Coffee filters are important part in most brewer machines. It filters the coffee sediment before going to your cup. Some of these equipments have built-in coffee filters that are reusable; just wash it carefully. On the other hand, there are also some brewer machines that require disposable coffee filters, so you need to have a stack on hand upon brewing coffee regularly.

  • Coffee beans

    They are the most important needed material upon brewing your cup of java. You can either buy green unroasted beans or readily roasted ones. If you decide to buy unroasted ones, you will need coffee roasting equipment in order to roast up the raw green beans. On the other hand, the roasted ones are also good; you can buy whole roasted beans or the grounded ones.

Whenever you plan to start brewing your own coffee, make sure to have the equipments mentioned above. You can find different brands among appliance stores. Some coffee product stores and Internet coffee shops are also offering these equipments, so you have a lot of choices to buy from.

Organic Coffee – What Are You Really Drinking?

Researchers have shown that coffee plants are sprayed with more pesticides than any other commercial agriculture crop.  These days, many consumers are demanding that the food they consume is organic.  Yet many people don’t realize that the coffee they are drinking contains many harmful substances.  Conventional coffee is routinely doused with pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers.  These chemicals work their way into the beans themselves and, ultimately into your body.

Luckily, these days the consumer has a choice between buying the conventional, pesticide-ridden coffee, or an organic alternative.  Organic certifying organizations do a terrific job of ensuring that farmers meet strict guidelines when they grow coffee on their farms.  

Consumers can buy a wide range of organic coffee products, including beans from over 40 different countries in the world to decaffeinated coffee, to flavored and instant coffees.  Products that carry the USDA Organic seal need to contain at least 95% organic ingredients.  Most of them are in fact 100%, since coffee is a complete, natural product.  If you are purchasing an organic bottled coffee drink, everything in it must be certified organic, including the sugar, dairy products, etc.   

Organic coffee is already thriving in the world.  It is estimated that North America alone consumes 85% of the coffee produced throughout the world.  In 2008, 81 million pounds of organic coffee was imported into the United States and Canada.  This may sound like a lot, but it only accounts for 3% of the total coffee consumed in North America.  The trend is on the rise though, as organic coffee is one of the fastest growing segments in the beverage industry.  It has a phenomenal 35% growth rate, which far outpaces that of conventional coffee.  This impressive growth has definitely caught the attention of coffee shops and supermarkets, where organic coffee is steadily pushing conventional coffee off the shelves.

Is organic coffee worth the extra cost?  

The answer is definitely yes.  Coffee prices are so deflated these days that it only costs a few pennies to make a cup of coffee at home.  You can buy a pack of quality organic coffee for only one or two bucks more than regular coffee these days and that works out to about a cent increase per cup.  Everybody wins when you purchase organic coffee.  You get better coffee without the pesticides.  The farmer gets a little more income to support his family, and the ground the coffee is grown on isn’t sprayed with toxic chemicals.  Now that is definitely worth a penny more per cup.

Electric coffee machines are great for making organic coffee. Use a single serve coffee maker for making a perfect cup of organic coffee.

Gourmet coffee is good, gourmet coffee drinks are fabulous. Using your own gourmet flavored coffee or espresso as a base you can make those tasty treats at home and save yourself a lot of money while impressing your friends at the same time. Gourmet coffee drinks can vary from lattes and cappuccinos to exotic ice cream drinks. There are also alcohol drinks that feature coffee which can be very relaxing after a stressful day at the office.

Gourmet Coffee Recipes

Chocolate Cappuccino: For the chocoholic who loves their coffee this satisfies both desires.

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. Vanilla syrup
  • 4-6 oz. Chocolate Milk or Chocolate Soy Milk if lactose intolerant
  • 4 oz. Espresso or Very Strong Coffee – can use gourmet chocolate flavored coffee if desired
  • Chocolate Shavings
  • Whipped Cream

Directions

  1. First pour the vanilla syrup into a cappuccino mug.
  2. Now add your fresh brewed espresso or coffee to the vanilla syrup and blend the two ingredients together.
  3. Next, steam your chocolate milk to 160 degrees F. (Use a candy thermometer to test the milk).
  4. Add to the coffee mixture.
  5. Top with a dollop of whip cream and chocolate shavings.

Variation: For a relaxing after dinner drink, add a 2 oz. Shot of Godiva Chocolate Liqueur or other chocolate liqueur.

Iced Latte with Flavor Variations: The traditional latte served up cold and creamy for those hot sultry days when you need a boost.

Ingredients

  • 2-4 oz. Espresso or Strong Coffee
  • 4-6 oz. Milk
  • Ice Cubes
  • Flavorings as desired (see variations)

Directions

  1. Pour the espresso and milk into a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add ice cubes and shake until well chilled. For variations use one of the following flavors. Note: For frozen latte, use a blender instead of cocktail shaker.

Variations: Add any one of the following flavorings to the blender or cocktail shaker. *Coffee syrups available in coffee section of grocer or at coffee shops.

2 oz Vanilla Syrup

2 oz. Chocolate Syrup

2 oz. Hazelnut Syrup

Iced Mint Mocha: This is a wonderful coffee drink for those hot summer days. For a spirited version you can add a liqueur such as Bailey’s Irish Cream.

Ingredients

  • Ice
  • 1 oz. of mint chocolate coffee syrup
  • 2 scoops of mint choc chip ice cream
  • 2-4 oz. espresso shots or strong coffee
  • Cold milk
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate shavings/sprinkles

Directions

  1. Place ice in blender, add mint chocolate chip ice cream and mint chocolate syrup.
  2. Pour in milk based on how thick you want the drink to be.
  3. Blend to desired consistency.
  4. Top with whip cream, chocolate shavings or sprinkles.

Fall Cappuccino: This coffee drink with a touch of cinnamon and cloves invokes those autumn nights when there is just a hint of chill in the air.

Ingredients

  • 4-6 Whole cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 4-6 Whole Green Cardoman
  • 3 tsp. Brown Sugar
  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate Shavings and Ground Cinnamon
  • 2-4 oz. Espresso
  • 4-6 oz. Steamed Milk

Directions

  1. Add 2 cups water to small saucepan.
  2. Add all spices to the water and heat to boiling.
  3. Allow to boil for 3-4 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, steam 4-6 oz. of milk to 160 degrees F.
  5. Pour the espresso into a cappuccino mug, add the spice mixture and stir well. Top with the steamed milk. Decorate with whipped cream, chocolate shavings and sprinkled cinnamon.

Variations: For more of a coffee drink, you can replace the espresso and steamed milk with 6-8 oz. of strong coffee.

For an adult beverage, add 2 oz. of your favorite brandy
