Long before the first steaming hot sip of coffee hits your lips, you should know that coffee graders have traveled long and hard, on arduous journeys in unpleasant and sometimes dangerous territories, to make sure you don’t have to settle for second best in your cups.

The grading of coffee happens well before the coffee is packaged and shipped to you back home. Before coffee hits the commercial market, a coffee grader known as a green coffee seller makes decisions about which beans should even make it to the roasting process. The “green” in the name refers to the fact that the coffee is raw – that these are coffee beans in their pre-roasted state.

Before they head off to be roasted, coffee beans are checked in a number of ways. First, all beans have to be of similar size and of approximately the same shape. Beans that are similar in size take a similar amount of time roasting, and which means your coffee taste won’t be thrown off a mix over roasted and under roasted beans. If you throw large and small beans in together, the small ones will pop and burn before the large ones even brown at all.

After the roasting process, new graders come along, and these graders are looking for different things in the beans. First and foremost, graders are looking for beans that have similar colors. When beans are different colors, it usually suggests that they have been roasted differently, which will impact the taste of your cup.

Likewise, they want to see that beans have been separated according to where they were grown. While mixes of beans are sometimes used in the final product to achieve a particular taste, this has to be done with care. Simply through beans together from all over the world will leave you with one unpleasant cup of coffee. Further, without this separation, you could be shelling out big bucks for what you think is matchless Kona coffee only to find out what you really bought was Folgers.

First, let’s talk about why you should use coffee grinders for better coffee. Most people don’t bother to grind their own coffee. This is purely because of convenience. I hear excuses like “I don’t have the time,” or “coffee grinders make too much noise”, or “I don’t want to clean up the mess” and on and on. The simple fact is this: you should grind the coffee just before you brew it. Here’s a simple test. Go ahead and open up a can of ground coffee. Smell the aroma? Now go ahead and grind some coffee at the supermarket. Smell the bag. Do you smell the difference? Well, you’ll taste the difference too. The reason for grinding the coffee is to get more surface area to extract more coffee taste. As soon as you grind the coffee, the grounds are exposed to air and the flavor and aroma begin to dissipate. You should brew the coffee immediately after using the coffee grinder for maximum flavor.

Coffee Grinders – Cheapie Blade Grinders

The cheapest type of coffee grinder is the blade grinder. Blade grinders work like your blender does. Spinning blades chop the coffee until the desired grind size is achieved. The benefit is that the blade grinder is inexpensive. The problem is that the coffee is ground unevenly. To the coffee expert, this yields a cup of coffee that is uneven and undrinkable. My take on this is that it is still better than not grinding the coffee yourself. All is not lost, however. On to a better option.

Coffee Grinders – The Burr Grinder

Burr grinders are used by professionals for good reason. Metal discs called burrs are set apart by a precise distance. Coffee beans are ground until they are the size of the gap between the burrs and they fall down the chute into the hopper. The benefit is an even grind. This results in a better coffee experience. The better burr grinders have precision settings for all types of coffees and brewing machines.

Brewing the perfect cup of coffee takes some learning, but with time and a little determination, anyone can become an expert! There are several key elements you should pay close attention to when brewing. Your coffee is greatly affected by the water you use, the temperature of water during brewing, the brew time, the brewing turbulence, the filtration, and the cleanliness of your brewing area. Remember, coffee taste quality can be very subjective, but tweaking these elements will help you find the brew that best suites you! Holding and serving your coffee at the proper temperatures will help ensure that all the flavors are realized.

Water

Other than the actual coffee beans, water is the most important element of the brewing process. Ensuring your water is fresh and good tasting is essential because water makes up over 98% of your final cup! For the cleanest tasting coffee, filter your water before you brew. Filtered water typically holds the most ideal mineral content and will help give your coffee a fresh taste. Water temperature during brewing will affect your coffee’s flavor and extraction. The ideal water temperature during brewing is somewhere between 195Ú-205ÚF.

Time

The brewing time can be the most detrimental element to the taste of your coffee. Ideally, you will want to get proper extraction and filtration in the shortest possible time to create the best testing coffee. Coffee brewed for longer than the recommended time will taste bitter. Finding the best brew may require you to experiment with the coffee grind size, either more fine or more coarse, depending on your preferences. Fine grinds should be brewed between 1 and 4 minutes, coarse grinds should be brewed between 6 and 8 minutes.

Health benefits of coffee to justify my cup! Nothing beats the aroma of the flavored coffee bean going through our house. My coffee mate puts our coffee pot on at 6am and not soon after, I am enjoying my first coffee and watching the morning news and reports on tv. I love my coffee and was determined to find a good reason to justify Java and learn about the health benefits of coffee.

Once my first cup is finished, I confess to getting a second not long afterwards. However, a girl has to have some vices, and coffee is mine, although I do not drink it often during the day. I could easily cave in to temptation, but the caffeine in coffee has been known to keep me awake at night. I sometimes have an organic decaf coffee or flavored decaf coffee. Sometimes I have mixed several brands together and come up with my own Suzie Special!

So what are some health benefits of coffee? Coffee is a source of antioxidants which help your body fight your free radicals – the bad guys. Decaf coffee has the same antioxidants as regular coffee, but minus the caffeine. Moderation is the key. Daily coffee can help to lower the risk of diabetes, reduce the risk of colon cancer and Parkinsons disease, and helps long duration of physical activity. Coffee can help you stay awake, alert, improve cognitive function, help elevate moods and may stop your
headache.

As far as I know, coffee does not cause breast cancer. Women who suffer with tender breasts, discomfort and water retention might like to consider reducing their caffeine, but it is a personal choice with personal experimentation to find the right level of coffee and caffeine for yourself.
