Coffee is an important part of many people’s day. Whether the coffee is the first cup or the last cup of the day, coffee aficionados get enough of their coffee. Have you considered all the coffee makers available for coffee lovers to make that cup of coffee? Eight types of coffee brewers can give you a taste of heaven.

Cones with filters, well, many coffee drinkers turn to these little devices when their regular coffee machines are breaks, needs repair or replacement. This improvisation can provide a better-than-nothing cup. These devices are great for emergencies or traveling in places where java is a foreign drink.

Filter machines are economical and brew a great cup of joe. For the person who prefers to wake-up to the smell of coffee, many have timers. Other machines shut off after a period of time to prevent carafes from burning or machines catching on fire.

Percolators are a great old-fashioned way to brew coffee. With their welcome thumping noise as they percolate the water through the beans, many people relive memories of grandparents, parents and coffee sharing moments. These java makers have no magic switches so users must remember to pull out the cord.

Turkish coffee ibriks are simple devices where ground beans, sugar and water brews a foamy beverage thick as ink. Guaranteed to give you a jolt when you drink it, this coffee is definitely an acquired taste.

French/Italian Presses make elegant full-bodied kaffe. When you follow the simple directions of coffee, adding water and pushing the press in the correct order, it is delicious. When you don’t follow directions, the beverage is full of floating grounds.

Single Cup Coffee – A Guide to the Options

Single cup coffee refers to the type of coffee that’s produced from single portion pods or containers – typically using single cup coffee makers specific to the particular brand or type of container. There are currently five main types or formats – Coffee Pods, Tassimo T Discs, Keurig K Cups, Nespresso Capsules and Nescafe Dolce Gusto Capsules, as we explain below.

First though, the common features…

They all allow you to brew a fresh cup of coffee, with only a minimum of waiting time and a minimum of preparation/attention required.

Single cup coffee making does away with the need to grind your own beans and reduces the actions to that of ensuring that there’s enough water in the machine, switching it on, then when hot (which normally only takes a minute of so) inserting the pod/capsule/disc and pressing a button to produce the freshly brewed coffee.

The machines are also typically quite compact, so don’t take up too much space on your kitchen counter or your desk! One thing to note is that it’s typically only the higher-end machines that can produce a true espresso, which is typically accepted as requiring a pressure of 9 bars or more, but may people find the drinks produced by the other machines perfectly acceptable, while being extremely convenient to use.

As mentioned above, single cup coffee comes in five main formats:

  • Coffee Pods – While these are the most common, interchangeable option, you do need to be aware that the ‘standard’ pod size is the 62mm size, as there are also 44mm and 55mm pods/machines. If you stick to the 62mm machines, such as the Philips Senseo single cup coffee makers or the Krups Home Cafe range, you’ll find that you have the widest range of choices, from both the producers of the single cup coffee markers as well as from independent sources.
    - A main source for this type of coffee pod is the Senseo Douwe Egberts range, which currently has a number of sub-ranges, covering the traditional coffee strengths such as Decaffeinated, Medium Roast, Dark Roast and Expresso, featured blends such as Sumatra Blend, Brazil Blend, Kenyan Blend and Colombia Blend together with other flavors such as Breakfast Blend, Creme Brulee, Chocolate and Paris (French Vanilla).
  • Tassimo T Discs – These work with the Tassimo range of single cup coffee makers, which are able to read the bar code on the discs, which allow the machine to adjust it’s processing according to the specific needs of the selected disk, including being able to use a ‘milk’ disc when making cappuccinos, etc.
    - The Tassimo system takes advantage of the capability to adjust the processing according to the particular requirements of the selected drink, so it’s able to dispense a range of drinks from premium coffees, crema coffees, real milk cappuccinos and lattes, espressos, hot chocolates and even teas.
  • Keurig K Cups – These work with the Keurig range of single cup coffee makers and fit between the T Discs and the Coffee Pods, in that there are more flavors or variations available than for T Discs, but fewer than the ‘open’ Coffee Pod format.
    - Keurig have partnered with a range of independent companies to provide a huge range of K-Cup varieties, including coffee sources such as Green Mountain Coffee, Diedrich Coffee Roasters, Van Houtte and Timothy’s, Tea brands such as Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow’s and Twinings. They have a large range of blends, covering categories including Extra Bold Roasts (30% more coffee per brew), Dark, Medium & Light Roast, Flavored, Decaffeinated, Fair Trade Certified and Organicm as well as Teas and Hot Cocoa.
  • Nespresso Capsules – As might be expected by now, the Nespresso Capsules only work with Nespresso single cup coffee makers, with the difference here being that these are the machines that can provide a true espresso, utilizing pressures in excess of the accepted minimum of 9 BAR to force the water through the ground coffee.
    - One thing to be aware of with the Nespresso system is that while the Nespresso machines are available in various retail locations, the Nespresso capsules are not, but rather have to be purchased directly from Nespresso, either online, via phone or mail or at Nespresso Boutiques. As a result, the ‘running costs’ tend to be somewhat higher than for other systems, which might need to be taken into consideration before purchasing a Nespresso single cup coffee maker.
  • Nescafe Dolce Gusto Capsules – These are relatively new to the market, but are backed by Nescafe and Krups. There’s a certain overlap between Nescafe’s Nespresso range and this range, but the focus of the Dole Gusto range appears to be on the home market and allowing them to cup a wider range of drinks that just espressos, which is the focus of the Nespresso.
    - The Dolce Gusto capsule range include Caffe Americano, Mocha, Espresso, Chococino, Cappuccino as well as variations such as Cappuccino Skinny and Cappuccino Ice.

The Nespresso range is probably the option for the true enthusiast, although the Nescafe Dolce Gusto range also uses a professional-level 15-bar pressure system and is worth considering. If new to single cup coffee makers, however, it might be worth starting with a Coffee Pod machine such as the Philips Senseo before seeing if investing in a more expensive system is needed.

Finally, one tip – the results from all the systems can often be improved if you are able to ensure that your mug is warmed before adding the coffee – Give it a try!

We Love Our New Single Cup Coffee Brewer

We recently purchased a single cup coffee brewer and we just love it. The model we bought is a Keurig Elite. It is one of the best purchases we have made in a long time. The taste of the coffee is fabulous and it is so easy to use.

If you are a coffee lover and have never tried one of these machines then you owe it to yourself to give one a try. Some of the things we have really enjoyed are; how fast it brews, how clean they are, and the variety of the coffees you have to choose from.

The Keurig Elite is the single cup coffee brewer we selected. The Keurig uses coffee that is stored in K-cups. You keep water filled in a reservoir on the side of the machine. The water does have to be heated, so if the unit has been off you will need to heat the water. All you have to do is turn the unit on and the water will automatically heat in about one minute. Once the heating red light goes out you are ready to go. You open the K-cup holder in the top, put in your selected K-cup, shut the top and press brew. On the Keurig Elite you have two choices of brew sizes. Small; which is 7.5 ounces, and Large; which is 9.25 ounces? You pick the size that gives you the coffee strength you prefer. It only takes about a minute to brew a perfect single cup of coffee.

These single cup coffee brewers are also very clean. With the K-cups all of the coffee is stored inside, so there is no coffee to spill. Even after brewing the K-cups are easy to toss in the trash without making any mess on the way. Because the brewing process is so clean, you will find that keeping the brewer clean is very easy. The area around the brewer also stays relatively clean. All we have to do is occasionally wipe down the area around the brewer. If you are as messy as me with traditional coffee grounds this is a real plus.

You will not believe the varieties of coffee you can choose from. In fact, you not only have a wide variety of coffees, you have a wide variety of teas as well. If anyone in your family likes cocoa, you will find a good variety of those as well. The coffee roasters you have to select from includes Green Mountain Coffee, Gloria Jeans, Diedrich, Van Houtte, Timothy’s, Tully’s, Newman’s Own, Coffee People, Caribou Coffee, and Emeril’s Gormet Coffee. I told you there were a lot of choices. These brands also give you choices regarding traditional brew strengths as well as a large selection of flavored coffees. We have really enjoyed some of the holiday flavors like Pumpkin Spice, Cinnamon Stick, and Ginger Bread. Another plus of the single cup coffee brewer is that if you want one type of coffee and your spouse wants something different, it is no problem. No need to compromise, you can both have what you want.

We have had our single cup coffee brewer for about two months now. We still brew a full pot of coffee every now and then, but we use the Keurig Elite more times than not. The flavor and strength of the coffee is always perfect. If you are a coffee lover, you owe it to yourself to try one of these single cup coffee brewers.

The website is http://www.singlecupcoffeebrewers.net which promotes his newest favorite product, single cup coffee brewers. If you are a coffee lover, you should really try one of these. We have loved ours.

Love Coffee? Then Only a Coffee Grinder Gives You a Perfect Cup

Coffee is one of those drinks you either love or hate.  There seems to be no middle -ground, and as such coffee lovers everywhere are always looking for ways to improve the taste of their brew by testing different methods and techniques in search of the perfect cup of coffee.

So where do you start in working out how to achieve a richer tasting, more flavorsome cup of coffee every time?  Well, you could just throw caution-to-the-wind and see where it takes you, or quite simply you can invest in a machine that is proven to improve the taste of your coffee.

If you love coffee and haven’t already got one, you need a coffee grinder…

The reason is quite simple, only by grinding your own coffee can you hope to achieve the perfect cup.  Why?  Well, you might be surprised to learn that even expensive store bought coffee grounds are likely to already be past their best.  This is because during the packaging process the grounds have already by exposed to air and therefore will have started to oxidize, potentially already running the coffee grounds you’ve just bought.

Whereas, if you were to purchase actual coffee beans and mill them yourself the air exposure is dramatically reduced due to the beans outer-shell safely preserving the contents.

Now before you rush-down to your nearest coffee retailer, there are a few different types of grinders that we need to discuss before making a decision.

Crusher:

One of the cheapest types of grinders is the ‘crusher’, and as the name implies attempts to squash the coffee beans to produce the grounds.  Although the crusher grinder is a step-in-the-right-direction for making coffee, it’s major disadvantage is that the coffee grounds produced are irregular and therefore not ideal for making coffee.

Blade:

The blade grinder is a popular choice and slices the coffee beans just like a food mixer would do.  The main problem with the blade grinder is again, they produce an irregular ground, not to mention they can be extremely noisy.

Burr:

The burr grinder is considered one of the best ways to grind coffee.  Normally there are two steel plates that can be adjusted at differing heights to grind the coffee to a uniform texture, making them ideal for making coffee.  However, the standard flat base burr grinders do suffer from rotating very fast.  Without having control over this heat build-up can pass directly to the bean and potentially spoil the end product, making the coffee too bitter or even burnt to the taste.

Fortunately the answer is to invest in a conical burr mill.  These operate in the same way but are able to rotate at much slower speeds, thereby preserving the great taste and aroma of the coffee whilst producing a truly even grind every time.  Although a conical grinder is the most expensive, the investment for any real coffee lover is certainly worth every penny comes highly recommended.
