The best espresso should have a powerful aroma, and flavor similar to freshly ground coffee. The cream should be dark reddish-brown and smooth, yet thick. The most common coffee maker is the drip coffee machine. The drip coffee maker is such named because the hot water is made to drip down freely to the coffee beans. Be mindful that the taste of the brewed coffee will rely on the amount of water that you put inside the water bucket. Too much water will dilute the taste of the coffee while too less of it will result to a stronger brew. There are measurements in ounces and milliliter along the water bucket to serve as a guide.

The water inside the water bucket is heated as it passes along a heat-resistant tube. The tube then goes into the drip area and release the heated water that is just below the boiling temperature. The water is heated by a heating element, the sort of resistive heating coil that gives out heat when electricity is passed through it. This is no different from the heating coil of the toaster oven. The heating element has two purposes: it has direct contact with the water inside the water bucket to boil it for a coffee brew and it keeps the coffee warm with the use of the heating pad where the coffee container is rested.

The coffee container or coffee kettle is a heat-resistant glass supported by a durable polyester plastic handle. The glass is transparent so you can easily check if you are running out of coffee brew. The coffee kettle will be kept warm for more than one hour by the heating pad. By this time, it’s expected that the coffee kettle already needs replenishing. If not, the coffee may be already cold enough to be enjoyed and you have to make a new brew again. The coffee maker is the only coffee machine that has become part of the usual home appliances. Other coffee machines can only be found in coffee shops. Note that other than the coffee maker, however, another coffee machine, the espresso maker, is starting to make its way into household use. With this in mind, it seems that more and more people are getting addicted with coffee. Also, specialty and espresso coffee brews are also becoming popular among coffee lovers around the world.

Today, most models of coffee machines are semi-automatic to automatic. Buttons and switches replaced the manual coffee straining and lever pushing, in case of espresso machines. Also, some are packed with features that will enable one to make any kinds of coffee in mind. Among these special features are built-in coffee bean grinder and frothe maker. With these high-end coffee makers, you can concoct your own coffee recipe.

There are a variety of ways to make a cup of coffee. It can be as simple as spooning instant powder into hot water or as complicated as the processes that use sophisticated and expensive coffee makers. Several kinds of coffee making systems are available, some of them upgraded versions of age-old methods.

The espresso pressurized infusion machine is one of the more popular commercial coffee makers. Smaller and more affordable models for the home are becoming more common. The espresso process creates a cup of coffee by forcing water that is under boiling temperature through coffee grounds in order to create a cup of coffee. A precise blend of Arabica beans, usually with a dash of Robusta, will yield espresso coffee with a distinct crema or fine foam on its surface.

Astute coffee enthusiasts know by just looking at the crema — which should have a dark, even honey color — if your blend is of high quality. In Europe, espresso is traditionally a strong blend served in a diminutive demitasse cup. Such a serving is called a short black, and may be made into a long black by adding water, or used as a “shot” to make various other coffee mixes.

Bodum plungers, also known as French Presses, are popular in both homes and dining establishments. They are a refinement of the unwieldy process of shaking water and coffee in a jug and then emptying out the mix over a filter that sifts away the grounds. In the French Press, coffee grounds that are coarser are placed in hot water, steeped for several minutes and then segregated by pressing down with a gauze filter fitted to the end of a plunger. Depressing the plunger slowly will yield clearer and better-tasting coffee.

A vacuum coffee maker moves coffee and water between chambers using steam and a vacuum to make excellent-tasting coffee. This system has declined in popularity in recent years, probably because the process used is more intricate and more taxing on one’s patience. But for some people, the resulting quality of the brew is more than enough to make up for the trouble. Vacuum coffee makers are now produced under various brand names, but were originally manufactured by Cona.

Available for both commercial and home use, drip or filter coffee makers operate more simply. Water mixed with ground coffee is filtered to a pot that is usually on top of a hotplate. The filter may be metal, plastic or throwaway paper. One drawback is that the water mixed with coffee may not be hot enough to produce excellent coffee. There are some who swear that they can taste the plastic or paper material used as filter.

Other popular systems for making coffee include the Turkish ibrik and the Italian mocha pot.

The coffee percolators of old, no longer preferred because the water they boil are said to depreciate the taste of coffee, can still be seen in some houses.

Iced Coffee Recipes for Enjoying Chilled Espresso, Thai Iced Coffee And Many More Variations

There are many refreshing iced coffee recipes available, and we have selected some of the most interesting for you. However, my favorite of all it the traditional Italian iced coffee recipe which uses freshly made espresso, a cocktail shaker and ice cubes. In fact, if you ask for an iced coffee in Italy this is the only recipe they will serve. Poured into a cocktail glass, the chilled Italian espresso is second to none.

When the heat is on try this traditional Italian iced coffee recipe …

So, how is the Italian iced coffee recipe actually made? Simple, like all good things. Use your espresso machine, if you have one, to make a normal shot for one, two or more servings. Pour the freshly made espresso coffee into the cocktail shaker, add ice cubes (the ice doesn’t get poured into the glasses with the coffee, so the flavor isn’t diluted), close the shaker and shake like crazy! Pour into cocktail glasses and enjoy. Surprisingly, the iced coffee will not be a dark espresso brown color, but a creamy beige .

Here are a few more iced coffee recipes for you to try
Bermuda Iced Coffee

For this recipe, you’ll need coffee, cream, sugar and coffee flavor ice-cream. Pour the coffee, cream, sugar and 1 or 2 scoops of ice-cream into a blender. Blend, and serve cold in glasses or mugs. Tastes great, but if you’re on a diet beware.

Fresh Lemon Cafe

Here you’ll need 1/4 cup of coffee to which you add 2 oz of lemon sherbet, 1/2 tsp of lemon juice, 1 tsp of grated lemon rind and 1 tsp of sugar. Place the contents to your blender and blend until smooth. Serve in chilled glasses.

Cinnamon Caramel

This recipe has an interesting taste. You’ll need about 6 tsp of ground coffee, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 cup caramel syrup. Prepare a pot of coffee in the usual way, but add the cinnamon to the ground coffee. Add the syrup to the hot coffee and stir until dissolved. Chill the coffee and serve over ice with milk, cream or sugar. For an interesting variation, you could also use this coffee, but chill it in the way of the traditional Italian iced coffee recipe above.

Thai Iced Coffee

Here’s another interesting variation. You’ll need strong ground coffee for brewing 4 cups, 4 tsp sugar, 4 tsp heavy cream, 2 tsp ground cardamom, 1 tsp almond flavoring, crushed ice. Add the cardamom to the ground coffee and brew, when ready add the sugar and almond flavoring, mix well and leave to cool or chill in fridge. Fill four glasses half way with the crushed ice, then add the coffee leaving about an inch or a little more from the rim of the glass. Hold a spoon over the coffee and gently pour the cream over the spoon so that the cream floats on the top of your iced coffee.
