Do You Love Espresso Coffee?

One of the many things that I love about Italy is the espresso coffee. Now it is part of my day-to-day life. There is no way I start my day without it, and another one after lunch is mandatory!

Of course, not everybody likes espresso; Two days ago I was in Paris with one french colleague, and he told me: “when I pay for coffee, I expect to receive a big coffee, not that espresso!”. It is like the size of the little cup is not worth what he paid for.

So this article is for real espresso lovers… if you do not love espresso, stop reading right now, because I am showing you how to make the best espresso coffee Italian style!

Choose Your Coffee Wisely!

The most important thing is to choose a good coffee; I have tried many of them, and I have found that the one I like the most (and also many of my friends) is this one: Kimbo Espresso Napoletano. If you can not find it in your supermarket, you can find it in Amazon.

Let the Ritual begin… and be precise on the water quantity

For me is pretty much a ritual now. I have gathered different techniques from many of my Italian friends, and have applied them to my coffee making process. The result? Many of them after drinking coffee at my house say: “Wow Luis! this is truly a great coffee!”

First, take your well trained Italian espresso coffee maker and add some water inside. It is very important that you do not use hot water. I use water from the faucet, as cool as it comes out. Hard water is not good for espresso coffee, so do not use it. There is a valve inside, fill it up until the water level is right below that little hole.

Let’s Add Some Coffee!

I like my coffee to have a strong flavor. So, I take the funnel on my Italian moka and fill it up creating a “little mountain” on it. Do not press it, just leave it that way.

Also, make sure that the coffee you are putting on the coffee maker is finely ground.

Flames On!

Screw tight your Italian coffee pot and put it on the kitchen burner. Keep the flame to a normal level, because if it is high, your coffee will come out before its time, and it will probably will have this burned taste. Our coffee needs its own time!

Also, keep the lid of the coffee maker up: it will prevent that the condensed vapor going back to our ground coffee, which may variate its flavor.

Take it out as soon as it brews (actually… before it does!)

Do not leave the coffee on the burner. A second before it comes up completely, take it away from the burner.

If you are using a 1-cup coffee maker, just pour it to your Italian coffee cup, and enjoy!

Instead, if you have a bigger espresso coffee maker and you are sharing it with more people, take a teaspoon and stir it a little bit (5 times will suffice).

There you are: you have prepared your own espresso coffee Italian style!

There is an ongoing debate in health manuals on the benefits of drinking coffee. A number of studies have found that over-indulging in coffee can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and ulcers. On the other hand there are also a number of studies which have proven that drinking coffee bean roasters coffee has salubrious health benefits. For example, a recent study showed that the regular coffee drinking reduces the risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s, and can even lower the risk of colon cancer. Apparently it is the high level of caffeine contained in coffee which is responsible for these health benefits. Similar results have been reported for type two diabetes. It appears that it is the antioxidants which are found in coffee which are responsible for lowering the risk of developing these diseases. Antioxidants regulate the growth of disease cells. Additionally, antioxidants are a terrific source of the chlorogenic acid which has been found to lower glucose concentration in the body. Antioxidants protect the body from radicals which can cause illness and increase the risk of major conditions, including cancers and heart disease. In addition to its antioxidant content, a recent study by the University of Bristol of gourmet coffee roasters found that the caffeine in coffee influences our mood and cognition. According to this study, the caffeine in coffee increases alertness and hence performance, in turn increasing productivity in the workplace. Caffeine gives a quick boost of energy which enables people to focus upon what they are doing, and to be able to remember details better.

These studies were all predicated upon the assumption that the person drinks two cups of coffee per day. However, it has been found that overindulging in coffee drinking reduces these benefits. Caffeine contains a mildly addictive stimulant; and it can increase the heart rate and the blood pressure when taken in excess. How much is “too much” is still being debated. A consensus of health experts might agree that probably, in most cases, up to three cups of coffee daily are allowable (and caffeine intake from other sources, such as sodas and teas, should be reduced).

Another point to bear in mind is that not all coffees contain the same amounts of caffeine. Apart from best tasting decaf coffee, gourmet coffees contain less caffeine than ordinary coffees. This is because gourmet coffees are derived from the bean of Arabica strains which contain far less caffeine than coffee made from inferior varieties. The limitation on the production of gourmet coffees is altitude – Arabica coffee requires a high mountain, cool and wet, subtropical climate; as well as rich soil. These growing conditions need less pesticides, which reduces contamination of the environment. Thus Arabica coffees can’t be grown just anywhere. And while gourmet coffee is lower in caffeine than other types, it is highest in antioxidants.

The first problem in looking for coffee tea makers is you probably would not find one that states it can brew both coffee and tea. The fact is, there are no tea brewers, most of the brewers out there are designed for coffee. But, there are a few coffee machines that can do both coffee and tea equally well. The first one that you should know about is the French Press. They are easy to use, brew good quality coffee or tea and are priced reasonably.

The brewing method for tea and coffee is exactly the same. The first thing is to add in the hot water that is slightly below boiling point, placed the coffee grounds or tea leaves into the filter mesh, allow it to seep for a few minutes then press the coffee grounds or tea leaves. After that, simply pour out the beverage and enjoy it. Other than being very user friendly, it is also very easy to maintain, in fact, most of the French Press is dish washer friendly. And lastly, the pricing for these brewers are very reasonable.

If you find this procedure too complicated, how about pressing one button for your beverage? For an even simpler coffee and tea solution, it would have to be the single serve coffee maker. While no coffee maker ratings would highlight this as their strengths, single serve coffee makers are one of the rare coffee machines that are able to brew equally good coffee and tea.

However, not all the brands are able to do that, currently in the market, only 2 brands are able to do it exceptionally well. They are Keurig and Tassimo, both offers consumers a wide array of beverages, coffee and tea being just the two of them. Out of these two brands, I like Tassimo more because of its individual brewing system. On the back of all its coffee pods known as T-disc are a series of code. This code teaches the machines how to brew the beverage by changing the water temperature and water level to suit the type of beverage.

So, a cup of tea would definitely be brewed differently from a cappuccino. This allows you to enjoy the full flavor of the tea and coffee in exactly the conditions that it would be brewed in coffee shops. If you are someone that loves to drink coffee and tea, then this brewer would be my recommendation. There is another machine that is also able to dispense coffee and tea, but most of you would probably not purchase it -table top vending machine. They have been around longer than the single cup coffee brewers and strictly speaking should be considered the first one button machine.

They are very easy to use and easy to maintain but not many people would like the taste of freeze dried coffee and tea. Freeze dried beverages are similar to the instant coffee and tea that you can get from supermarket, so I doubt anyone would be paying money for a machine to dispense instant coffee! There you have it, a guide of the various types of brewers that can brew both coffee and tea and also my personal recommendation on the one which I think is better.
