Techniques to Brew the Best-Tasting Coffee

If you love to stay at home and brew your own coffee, you should learn the ways to do it perfectly. You could brew coffee and produce a best-tasting blend, the one you usually buy at famous coffee shops. There is no need to buy the most expensive coffee at the market. All you have to do is to invest in good coffee brewing equipment and learn how to brew the best-tasting coffee.

There are three recommended coffee brewing types you could consider, namely, French presses, automatic drip coffeemakers, and cold-brew tools. The best and proven brewing methods require heating water until it reaches a temperature of about 195 degrees F to 200 degrees F. Do not worry because you do not have to dip in a thermometer to gauge water temperature. When using a French press pot, this ideal temperature is achieved when bubbles start to surface vigorously. When that happens, turn off the heat and simply wait for about 20 seconds to 30 seconds before you put coffee in for brewing.

As for automatic drip coffee makers, water would not boil to reach the same high temperature. But brewing is complemented by the use of the best filters available. You could choose from stainless steel, brown paper, white paper, and gold. Gold filters are the best, according to most experts because they last longer, they do not diminish flavor, and they do not produce chemical-tasting compounds that are often created when using white paper filters. Use about .46 ounces of coffee for every 8 ounces of hot water to please your taste.

When using the cold brew method, you do not have to follow the procedures in brewing coffee using French press pots and drip coffeemakers. Steep coffee grounds in cold water and leave overnight. Doing so could help create a very smooth-tasting coffee concentrate, which could last for many weeks.

In the end, whichever method or equipment you decide to use, remember to make sure the water you use does not contain any off flavor. Using bad tap water is not advisable as doing so could guarantee a badly brewed coffee since coffee brewing is comprised of about 95% to 98% water. Lastly, always clean your coffee brewing equipment after every use. Take note that coffee is leaving an oily residue, which could become rancid over time. Use soap and water or distilled vinegar in cleaning equipment to eliminate off flavors.

When brewing coffee the ratio of ground coffee to water is vital. Generally the rule is 1 standard coffee scoop (2 tablespoons) of ground coffee to every 6 ounces of water. The only problem here is that coffee scoops can vary in capacity. The ideal way is to measure the capacity of your coffee scoop and adjust your subsequent coffee measurements accordingly. If weaker coffee is preferred then the 2 to 6 rule applies. Make it full strength and then dilute to taste with hot water or milk.

There are many ways to brew coffee but a percolator should not be one of them. Percolators violate two of the fundamental rules of good coffee brewing. They boil the coffee which extracts bitter and sour substances that should play no part in coffee and they pour water that is too hot over the grounds repeatedly. The water should be just right and poured only once.

There are many recommended methods of brewing a good cup of coffee.

The filter cone method involves pouring the hot water through ground coffee that has been measured into a filter set inside a cone. Over recent years this method has become increasingly popular. Connoisseurs prefer to use gold-washed metal filters but paper filters are convenient and easy to use.

Electric Drip machines operate in much the same fashion as manual filter cones except that they pour water over the coffee electrically from a pre-measured reservoir. The flat-bottomed cupcake shaped filters are thought to allow the water to saturate the ground coffee more evenly than the cone shaped filters.

The commonest version of the Metal drip pot is the old-fashioned stovetop pot divided from top to bottom into chambers for hot water, ground coffee and brewed coffee. These are excellent and produce coffee, which is full in flavor and body.

Plunger Pots or French Press Pots operate in a unique manner. The course ground coffee is placed into the pot. Hot water is then added and the grounds are left to steep. Then a metal screen attached to a plunger is slowly pushed down forcing the coffee grounds to the bottom of the pot. Most kitchens will have some sort of Coffee Machines in them. Personally I have three. One Coffee Machine that is out permanently and two Coffee Machines that like it in the cupboard! As time goes by I am sure to gather more Coffee Making equipment as I am a self confessed coffee addict. But I am not alone.

Nowadays, coffee is all the rage. Not only do you have to choose among the dozens of franchise coffee shops, coffee types, espresso, cappuccino, and all other kinds of java, you also have to worry about what kind of coffee machines to work with. You can still get the old-fashioned drip machines, but the even more old-fashioned presses and hand brew machines are back in style. Then there are the new fangled pod coffee machines, which infuse hot water through coffee pods, and the top-notch espresso makers.

Drip coffee machines, though, are still one of the easiest types to use for beginners and coffee aficionados alike. They use a method of brewing that can create the most delicious coffee. The key to these machines is using a gold, nylon, or other type of permanent filters. Permanent filters make sure that the flavor molecules from the coffee grinds pass through into the water, but more importantly, the permanent filters do this without adding unwanted flavors. You may have to clean the filters after each use, but this little bit of extra work is well worth it. Honest!

What is wrong with paper filters for coffee machines? They impart an aftertaste into the finished product, and they absorb some of the special flavor molecules and aromatic oils from your coffee beans, which are what gives your cup of joe its tantalizing taste. If you absolutely have to use paper filters try rinsing them with hot water first as this helps to wash away some of the after taste.

When using drip coffee machines, stick with medium to fine grinds of coffee. Be sure to only add the right temperature water to the mix. This means water temperatures that are between 195 degrees and 205 degrees to ensure the best flavor extraction from the coffee grounds.

And if you want to follow the most expert rules for using drip coffee machines, you should remove the grounds from the filter before the last couple of drops of water have filtered through. This prevents your coffee from being over-extracted and overly bitter. One last thing. Before you serve this delicious coffee to yourself or to a guest, stir it.

The ground coffee beans have longer contact with the water with the style of coffee making, the flavor stronger, and if you leave the brew in the plunger for too longer, it may become bitter.

Finally, the espresso machine is a popular home coffee maker that produces a great tasting Italian style coffee. Taste is varied by changing the grind size, and varying the pressure that the water is forced through the grinds.

The most common type of espresso machine uses a pump for brewing. You can get a single or dual boiler. The double boiler allows you boil water for brewing and also brew water for steaming the milk.
