Buying Roasted Coffee

One of the most confusing experiences for the new coffee enthusiast is shopping for coffee. There are innumerable brands, names, origins, roast profiles, among other variables which might cause the consumer to end up with an unsuitable coffee for their predilection. Here I will show you how to buy and prepare coffee.

If possible, avoid buying your coffee from a supermarket (unless it’s instant…yuk!) Ideally you should buy your coffee from a roaster, coffee shops who get theirs delivered every other day, or even better, buy freshly roasted coffee online; it’s widely available nowadays. If you must buy your java at the grocery store, make sure the coffee is not kept near strong sources of odors, like fish, onions, etc.

Purchase your beans whole and grind them right before preparing your coffee, this will ensure maximum aroma from your beans. Buy enough coffee to last you for a couple of weeks. After that period, coffee loses its fragrance and you will end up drinking a cup of stale black water with a distant hint of coffee.

Never store your coffee in the refrigerator or in the freezer, this is the fastest method to ruin a perfectly good coffee. To properly store your coffee, do it in an airtight container, away from light, heat or moisture, and always try to store whole beans.

There are many ways to prepare coffee, but the three basic methods are French press, drip method, and espresso.

For French press method you should grind your beans to a medium grind. Preheat your French press by filling it half way with hot water and discarding such water after the glass is warm to the touch. Add the desired amount of ground coffee and water, which should be hot but not quite boiling and stir. Wait 2 and a half minutes before slowly depressing the plunger. Serve and enjoy!

Drip brewing is the most common method and ironically is the one with the least aroma or flavor. For drip method, your coffee should be ground coarse. It is a good idea to, by trial and error, know how much ground coffee makes a perfect cup, so make sure your ratio coffee – water is correct.

Preparing great espresso [http://www.myworldcoffee.com/espresso-blends.html] requires two things: a good espresso maker (preferably pump driven) and good, freshly roasted coffee beans. Your espresso beans are usually roasted dark and must be grounded finely. Make sure you pack the coffee tight in to the portafiller (the handle with the filter) and clean any lose coffee around the rim, this will ensure a tight fit and produce optimum crema.

Experiment and determine which method you prefer, or which blend and roast profile suits your preferences. Remember, a good coffee starts with good beans. Enjoy!

My World Coffee brings to you the finest coffee beans from different parts of the planet. All our coffee beans are 100% Arabica and bought green; then roasted every morning in small batches and packaged prior to shipping, ensuring you will get the freshest coffee available online.

I Have a Perfect Pod Coffee Maker!

If you are interested to know which brand is a perfect pod coffee maker, then you might first want to think about the definition of “perfect”. In short, what is a perfect single serve coffee maker?

There are probably tons of definitions out there, but mine goes like this: As long as the pod coffee maker can brew many types of coffee blends, it would be perfect, don’t you think so?

The single most daunting thing about single serve coffee maker is the closed system and their lack of coffee varieties. Pod coffee maker are already easy to use and are also very easy to clean, add in the element of variety, no coffee makers can match them in capability!

Just imagine owning a senseo, this machine is easy to use and maintain, which are great. Now, imagine having the ability to use any types of coffee that you fancy that is a very good thought right?

Unfortunately, till now, senseo is still a closed system like many other single serve coffee makers. Which means you would have to use douwe egberts if you are brewing coffee with a senseo.

There is however a machine that can mitigate this situation. It is known as the perfect pod maker. Its sole purpose is to make coffee pods that are applicable for coffee makers like senseo.

Rather than highlighting which brands would be able to use this great piece of machine, I would share which brands would not be able to use coffee pods from this perfect pod maker.

They are Nespresso, Keurig and Tassimo. This is mainly because these 3 companies are using their own special pods and not the standard coffee pods. So, other than these 3 brands of pod coffee maker, the rest of the brands theoretically have the ability to brew any coffee blends using the perfect pod maker.

And this pod maker similar to the single serves coffee maker concept, easy usage. All one need to do is to choose a coffee blend they like, and then filled it into the paper filter that is provided by the perfect pod maker.

The amount of coffee is really up to individual, but I would recommend a 8-10 grams for a strong and intense coffee. After filling the filter paper, simply press down this pod maker and wait for approximately 8 seconds and you would get a coffee pods that you can use.

There are not much things that you need to take note while using this perfect pod maker, although, it would be important to check that your coffee pods are properly sealed as any breakage (especially inside your coffee maker) could be disastrous.

For optimum taste, many users of the perfect pod maker feedback that it is better to wet the pods prior to inserting it into the single serve coffee maker, the feedback is that wetting the pods allows the hot water to seep better thus providing a better tasting coffee.

So, while this is not a pod coffee maker per se, this is a machine that can really better your coffee experience with a single serve coffee maker, right?

Choosing a Coffee Maker

If you like coffee you might agree with this ” A perfect cup of coffee is dependent on 1) coffee and 2) coffee maker”.

Choosing good quality coffee preferably whole beans, marks the first step to making a good cup of coffee Making sure that the water temperature is right for brewing and adding suitable amount of water to the coffee will impact on the aroma of the coffee that is going to be served.

The task of choosing a coffee maker thus seems to be important since the coffee maker will affect the brew. Interestingly, for the same beans that are used, the coffee that is brewed taste different. I’m saying this out of experience. The two different types of coffee maker that are available in my office produces different tastes of coffee though they use the same beans. Interesting? How could this has happened? The extraction of coffee from coffee grounds or beans by different coffee makers affect the flavor and taste of the coffee.

The most basic type of coffee maker is the automatic drip coffee maker. It is simple to use. Coffee grounds are put into a filter funnel and then water is boiled and flows through the funnel. If you are someone who like things simple and hassle free, you might want to go for this conventional and reliable type of coffee maker. Most such coffee makers in the market offers an automatic turn off safety feature and a pause and serve feature. Prices for such coffee makers are around the range of US$60 – US$140 dependent on the brand and model. The normal capacity is between 8 – 12 cups.

If you like to have a bit more options in customizing your cup of coffee you might wish to go for a coffee and espresso combination machine. These types of coffee makers offer more variety in the type of beverages that can be made from regular coffee to latte and espresso. Prices are steeper, starting from US$200 onwards. When choosing such a machine, you might want to consider the features such as the grinder, milk frother, good bean hopper, strong pump. If your skills in coffee making are good, you might want to choose a manual machine. If not, an automatic machine will help to save the trouble but give you a good cup of coffee.

Different brands of coffee makers are available in the market and as a conscious consumer looking for good value, it is important to consider the reliability of the machine and the reputation of the manufacturer other than price and functionality. When you are embarking on the journey to get the right coffee maker, why not keep these pointers in mind?

The Convenience of One-Cup Coffee Makers

The one-cup coffee maker has many benefits. Perhaps you are the only coffee drinker in your house, and you are tired of pouring good coffee down the drain because you made too much. Maybe you enjoy gourmet coffee, but do not have the time or inclination to grind beans for a full pot. Or perhaps you want a convenient, mess-free way to enjoy a fresh cup of Joe at your desk.

If any of these are true, then a single serving brewer may just be for you.

Most of these individual coffee brewers have a built in filter. You just drop in a sealed cup or pod of your favorite coffee, hit a button, and in less than a minute, you have a fresh, steaming mug of java.

You can use your favorite cup with most of these, and some come with a thermal travel mug. There are compact machines that will even let you choose between coffee and tea.

If you do opt to go with a smaller version of the coffeepot, make sure you drink your coffee within 20 minutes, or it could turn bitter.

The one-cup coffee maker is perfect for your office at work, or for your desktop at home. You can have everything you need for a freshly-brewed cup sitting right in your desk drawer, never needing to interrupt yourself to get a quick coffee fix. The best part is that they are not messy, and cleanup is a snap. Any removable parts can be rinsed or thrown into the dishwasher.

Here are some favorites based on customer reviews.

o Melitta Single Cup – This sleek, modern-looking machine has earned the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. A metered tank allows you to brew up to five cups before having to refill, and it comes in three color choices. Use your own mug and have a hot cup of coffee in less than 60 seconds, or a cup of tea in about 35 seconds.

o Keurig – One of the most popular brands of single-serve coffee maker today, the Keurig offers an adjustable brew size – up to 11.25 ounces. The programmable functions and removable water reservoir add to the ease of use, and its quiet brew and auto shut-off functions add to its appeal. Beginning at around $99, this is one of the more expensive single-cup brewers.

o Senseo – Another of the nation’s favorites, Senseo’s compact design allows you to use your favorite mug, and removable parts can go right in the dishwasher. Brew either four-ounce or eight-ounce cups with an auto-shut off feature. Priced at around $70, this one-cup roaster is a great bargain.

o Black & Decker – The little Brew-n-Go percolates fresh coffee right into a handy travel mug. The auto shut-off feature will give you peace of mind. This little bargain model is another customer favorite.

o Bialetti – This java maker lets you make the perfect cup of espresso at home. Just put your water and coffee into the specially designed pot and heat up over your stove. Starting at around $47, this little coffee pot gives you the choice of brewing two cups or four.

o Bunn – The fast brew option on the My Café not only gets your coffee ready in a hurry, but allows you to brew between four and twelve ounce increments.

If you choose to use your one-cup coffee brewer to make tea instead, there are two ways you can enjoy a steaming cup. One is to put the teabag into the filter, where the coffee pod would normally go. Fill with water, hit the start button, and let it brew. In just a few seconds, you will have a steaming cup of tea.

The other method is to run hot water through the machine and place your teabag inside your cup. Heated water fills the cup, allowing the tea bag to steep like it usually would.

Either way, you will have an enjoyable hot treat.

The only potential disadvantage to the one-cup coffee maker is the lack of variety in coffee choices. If you prefer to experiment with various flavors and roasts, you may find yourself wanting more choices with the one-cup option. With these little coffee brewers, you are required to use the appropriate cup or pod designed for your machine.

On the other hand, many of the coffee pods available on the market are of the gourmet variety, allowing you to taste some exotics blends and roasts without spending a fortune. The convenience of the packets makes them so easy to use. Simply toss into the trash when you are finished, with no loose, messy grounds to concern yourself with.

The one-cup coffee brewer may also be a perfect addition to your kitchen for those times when you are in a hurry, but really need that pick-me-up you get from a fresh cup of coffee. You only need to delay yourself for one minute, and then you will be ready to fly out the door, coffee in hand.

The units are small enough they hardly take up any room, making them easy to stow in a cabinet, desk, or cubby. Add one to your list of “must haves” for your office, or put it on your birthday list. When you discover the convenience of the one-cup coffee maker, you will be glad you did.
