If you want to save money on your coffee habit, buy it directly from the source. By this, I mean you should think about buying coffee direct from the roaster company yourself. If you’re like a lot of true coffee aficionados you don’t want a middleman (supermarket or other store) coming between you and your java habit, after all. 

Real coffee lovers tend to feel this way, and here’s why: Coffee beans generally hit their maximum peak of flavor right after they’re roasted. Now, once the roasting process has occurred the “flavor clock” begins counting down, so you should find and buy your coffee beans quickly. Quickly, that is, if you want to experience what truly fine coffee tastes like. Don’t worry about it if coffee’s not all that big a deal to you, rookie.
 
Face it; many folks only really get to taste supermarket coffee, for the most part. We buy ground roast in a bag, but we’re usually not aware that those beans were roasted and ground several weeks or even months back. In this regard, chances are good that at least some of the flavor will have been lost. As evidence of this, note how flavorful the aroma of a freshly-opened can seems and then note how it will lessen over time as you open, close and then reopen the can again and again.
 
It’s always my recommendation that the middleman be cut out, if you’re really into good coffee. Buy coffee direct, and do a bit of research – by taste testing numerous coffee types – to see what you actually like. There are many different coffees available for purchase, too. Dark coffee, light coffee, coffee blends…they’re all at your fingertips, right online. 
 
So power up the computer and then do a search for your favorite coffee. Are you into Kona coffee, maybe? Then go to a search engine and plug in a query for the nearest distributor and order it from that source. Some coffees can be fairly uncommon on local store shelves, so chances are you’re going to have to have it shipped in. Genuine Hawaii coffees or even Jamaica Blue Mountain blends are like that, as a matter of fact. In that case, your java habit will rely on overnight shipping, mainly.
 
Here’s a piece of good news when it comes to buying coffee direct: Prices are very reasonable. In fact, you can buy your favorite blends direct from the distributor or roaster and save substantial money. Picture being able to purchase gourmet coffee for far less than you’d pay at your supermarket. For the biggest price savings, you’ll need to buy from 10 to 25 pounds of coffee to see the most savings.
 
For most coffee enthusiasts (read: freaks), this isn’t a problem at all. Many lovers of the golden roasted nectar known as coffee drink about 4 cups a day with no sweat, and they’d love to drink more if they could get away with it, nerves-wise. So if coffee is really your thing, and you adore the smell and taste of it, consider buying coffee direct from the source and you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised at the results.

Coffee roasting basics

Coffee is grown in remote areas throughout the world. In places like Java Indonesia, Kona Hawaii, and Harrar Ethiopia coffee is grown, selected, and then shipped globally. Since coffee is grown and consumed in different regions and since it is so popular, it is the second largest commodity exchanged in the world behind crude oil.

The most natural thing would have been for roasted coffee to be made where it is grown. It is, however, impossible for many reasons. First, while green coffee can be stored for one year without significant impact on the quality, roasted coffee provides fresh aroma and flavor for only about two weeks. Shipping roasted coffee by ship, would result in stalled coffee at destination.

In addition, coffee is roasted for local tastes. The bitter black roasts used in southern Italy are very different from those light acid ones consumed in northern Europe. In fact, the capacity of the district roaster to adjust roasting (and coffee blends) according to taste is an important competitive advantage – assuming it is well done, of course.

Should I do it at home?

Great, you say, no problem, give me some tomatoes, a package of butter, cheese, and I’ll take a pound of coffee…. But wait, is it freshly roasted?

Fresh coffee is like sunlight to the flowers. Take it away and it shows, real fast. First make sure you grind just before you brew – just as they do in that gourmet coffee shop around the corner where you have incredible organic coffee each time you visit. While the coffee roasted for a period of two week, the coffee takes only hours! Do not buy coffee unless you’re really in caffeine … it would you wilting flowers?

OK, great, we pick up the coffee beans and go to the cashier. But wait, it is indeed fresh? Take a look at the expiration date – it’s a year out. Mmm, what does this mean? Well, nothing really. Unless you are buying from a local roaster, chances are you buy coffee has already been roasted a few months ago, flushed with an inert gas such as nitrogen, to reduce oxidation and preserve freshness, and vacuum packed. Not very exciting, right?

So how about roasting coffee at home? Have you ever make bread at home? A pie? Remember that smell? The taste? Crispy! Well, it works also for coffee as well. Home roasted coffee gives both the means to experiment and experience of coffee in its natural form and the ultimate guarantee of freshness. Just be warned, roasting coffee is not for everyone. If you like cooking, if you’re a handyman, if you paint your own walls, go!

Wrong! First, green beans are not easy to find. Your best source is Sweet Maria’s online site, which is the ultimate source for supplies and information. Be warned though, this site is all for geeks. No problem, just take the beans and run … Coffee Bean Corral may be a friendly source, but it potentially has a smaller variety. Be sure to compare prices of course. One of the major benefits of roasting at home: raw beans are 50% cheaper than roasted ones. Cool!

Ok, that done, should I buy one of these geeky roasting devices? Probably not. Let’s start with the easy path – your oven.

Preheat it to 430 degrees, place half a pound of beans in the cooking pan and put it in the oven. Make sure you shake every five minutes for even roasting. While you’re at it, open the windows – this is a smoky business… Set your watch for 20 minutes.

Start looking at the color of the beans. Maybe have some coffee from your favorite cafe so you can compare the color and stop the roasting when your beans get the desired roast level. Take the hot beans outside (you do not want all the coffee chaff inside), place them in a colander, and shake a little to cool them down. Store the beans in a cool dark place – no vacuum required, they are fresh for a week.

So, what’s next for me?

Nothing …. or everything … The world of roasting is as deep as you want it to be. You want just the tip of the iceberg? Well, you’re already there. Do you want to discover more? Surf the web, learn more about the coffees available there, play with them – develop your palate and taste. In a short time and a lot of passion, you can easily become a good home coffee roaster, which is much better than what you get at Starbucks and at a fraction of the price. well, at some point you may even get a cool roasting machine – never say never …

The first recorded use of coffee as a beverage goes back to the ninth century in highland Ethiopia. According to the legend, a shepherd named Kaldi in Ethiopia noticed that his goats seemed to dance about and to have a higher energy level after eating bright red berries from the coffee plant. Coffee use soon spread to Egypt, Yemen, and Arabia where raw coffee beans were processed by being roasted and then brewed into a beverage. By the fifteenth century coffee drinking had spread throughout the Middle East and into Turkey, Persia and all over north Africa. At the end of the sixteenth century a German doctor traveling in the Near East described coffee as a drink as black as ink which is useful in the treatment of many illnesses, especially stomach disorders.

The thriving commerce between the Middle East, North Africa, and Venice soon brought coffee and coffee drinking to Venice, from where it quickly spread throughout Europe. Although there was suspicion of the drink due to its Muslim origins, Pope Clement VIII declared coffee to be a respectable Christian beverage in 1600, which decree made coffee drinking socially respectable and increased its popularity. The first coffee house in Europe opened in 1645 in Italy. Soon Dutch traders began importing large quantities of coffee to northern Europe. In spite of Arab prohibitions against allowing green coffee suppliers to export unroasted seeds or living coffee plants, in 1616 a Dutch trader named Pieter van den Broeck was able to smuggle some live coffee seedlings out of Aden to Europe. The Dutch began to grow coffee in their colonies in Ceylon and Java, and in 1711 coffee was first exported from Java to Holland. The English East India Company was also active in coffee growing and exporting at this time, and in 1657 coffee was first introduced in France. Coffee came to Poland and Austria after Turkish invaders were defeated in the Battle of Vienna in 1683 and their supplies of coffee were captured by the defenders.

Coffee came to North America with the European colonization, but it was not as successful there as it had been in the old country. The English tax on tea, which led to the Boston Tea Party and other protests by American colonists, turned America into a principally coffee drinking country. During the American Revolution tea imports from England were cut off and coffee demand increased to such an extent that the dealers were forced to hoard the scarce supply of fair trade coffee beans and to raise prices drastically. The War of 1812 also restricted imports of tea from England and created greater demand for coffee. The Civil War was fought on coffee, which became a contraband item at the frontier between north and south: illicit salt and coffee being traded for tobacco and cotton.

Today raw coffee beans are the most valuable legally-traded export item after petroleum. Fair trade coffee beans are the most important cash crop in many countries in the Third World. Over 100,000,000 rural green coffee suppliers in developing countries depend on coffee as their main source of income.

Coffee is an integral part of my family. We’ve had disputes, and discussions settled over coffee. Sometimes we have bargains and agreements done over coffee. In demonstrable fact coffee has given our family time to slow down and simply catch up.

With coffee so ever famous, it’s no wonder that it’s become a business life blood. Some companies even charge up to $5 for a cup, and yet people are still buying. All the benefits, all the wonder and taste but we have never really asked about the coffee bean to whom we have much to thank for.

Coffee Beans through the Years

A lot of people consider coffee a friend, and a shoulder to lean on. The coffee bean has many secrets which we as firm patrons of its fruits have yet to explore. It’s come a long way from its humble origins; the coffee bean has had many travels. Did you know that the lowly coffee bean was first venerated for its curative properties? The bean is also brewed for religious meditation purposes.

Coffee comes from berry producing trees encountered in the Middle East. The berry itself looks a lot like a very small cherry, red and agreeable. The berries are edible, they are considerably sweet. Each berry contains two locules, enclosed inside are the beans which is the cash crop. The coffee tree cannot tolerate frost or extremely cold weather that is why it is generally found on regions where there is ample sun and rain.

The coffee tree used to be a source for a tisane, where in the fruits, flowers and leaves where boiled in water, kind of like tea.

It was the Arabs, who innovated upon the idea of making drinking coffee by roasting the dried coffee bean.

The Coffee Bean Travels

The story is that a Moslem stole some coffee beans from a farm in Arabia and brought them to his home in India. There he planted the coffee bean one by one and made it flourish, supplying one – third of India’s coffee produce.

From Arabia to India, word spread of the deliciously enchanting and aromatic coffee. Soon the French and the Dutch became enamored of the coffee bean as well. In their desire to produce the bewitching brew; the French brought coffee to Dijon ( a region in France ) unfortunately the coffee tree is not adept to cold weather, so the whole crop was wasted. The Dutch however was a lot cleverer. They planted the coffee seeds in Java where it thrived and became a reliable crop.

Even the famed King Louie XIV, who is captivated by coffee had a tree shipped to Paris, and built a Greenhouse especially for the Noble Tree. That same coffee tree is the fore bearer of the trees found in the South and Central America today.

There are 50 types of coffee trees in the world today. But only three are acknowledged to produce the best coffee bean of all time. No matter who you are, or where you’re from – have a quiet moment, enjoy a cup and let your mind wander.

Health benefits of coffee to justify my cup! Nothing beats the aroma of the flavored coffee bean going through our house. My coffee mate puts our coffee pot on at 6am and not soon after, I am enjoying my first coffee and watching the morning news and reports on tv. I love my coffee and was determined to find a good reason to justify Java and learn about the health benefits of coffee.

Once my first cup is finished, I confess to getting a second not long afterwards. However, a girl has to have some vices, and coffee is mine, although I do not drink it often during the day. I could easily cave in to temptation, but the caffeine in coffee has been known to keep me awake at night. I sometimes have an organic decaf coffee or flavored decaf coffee. Sometimes I have mixed several brands together and come up with my own Suzie Special!

So what are some health benefits of coffee? Coffee is a source of antioxidants which help your body fight your free radicals – the bad guys. Decaf coffee has the same antioxidants as regular coffee, but minus the caffeine. Moderation is the key. Daily coffee can help to lower the risk of diabetes, reduce the risk of colon cancer and Parkinsons disease, and helps long duration of physical activity. Coffee can help you stay awake, alert, improve cognitive function, help elevate moods and may stop your
headache.

As far as I know, coffee does not cause breast cancer. Women who suffer with tender breasts, discomfort and water retention might like to consider reducing their caffeine, but it is a personal choice with personal experimentation to find the right level of coffee and caffeine for yourself.

Forget coffee prices and enjoy a Java. Learn how to make coffee taste great like the ones you get in Cafes, and experiment with different types of coffee brands and flavors until you find a some you really like. Then brew up in your latest hot coffee mod con and savor the wonderful aroma.

Some things in life are simple, inexpensive and good for you. Wonderful health kitchen oils such as flaxseed oil or coconut oil, and a glass or two of red wine are a couple of life’s pleasures and your daily coffee is another! So sit back, relax, take a deep breath and enjoy your Java knowing there are health benefits of coffee!
